understand the human implications of big data

steps in developing a big data strategy is defin-
ing the business problems that big data appli-

and external,” according to a report from For-
rester Research, “Ultra-Fast Data Access Is

Enterprises need a “modern data analytics
strategy that provides a ubiquitous, real-time
data access layer to all relevant data from all
different sources,” the report noted.
To meet the technology needs of these
enterprises, SAP is continuing to invest in pro-
viding business users with access to advanced

analytics tools that use its HANA in-memory,
column-oriented relational database manage-
ment system, said Anne Moxie, senior analyst
at Boston-based Nucleus Research.
Werner Hopf, CEO of Dolphin Enterprise
Solutions Corp., agreed with Moxie’s assess-
ment. Dolphin is an SAP partner based in
Morgan Hill, Calif. “SAP invested a ton of
development over the past two or three years
to extend HANA capabilities, so it can also be
used as the underlying database for transaction
processing systems,” he said.
For example, in September 2015, SAP
announced HANA Vora, a new in-memory
query engine for Hadoop that addresses the
challenges companies face as they manage dis-
tributed big data, Moxie said.
HANA on its own, however, is not well suited
to very large data volumes because it’s not
cost-effective to put large amounts of informa-
tion in memory, explained John Appleby, U.S.

sultancy and SAP partner Bluefin Solutions, a
Mindtree company. “We’re pleased that SAP
has embraced Hadoop.”

in various industries glean more insight from
their big data.
“To make HANA more capable for big data
projects, SAP allows for a close relationship
with Hadoop data,” Moxie said. “Connect-
ing different data sources and combining the
data that your organization has with Hadoop
data … allows for a more complete view. That

enables data scientists to have access to all of
the data to draw the correct assumptions.”
CenterPoint Energy, an electric and natu-
ral gas utility based in Houston, was one of
the first SAP users to implement the HANA
big data platform and HANA Vora to bring
together its highly distributed enterprise data
framework. Hadoop will enable CenterPoint
Energy to cut the information technology
costs associated with increasing big data stor-
age requirements, while HANA Vora will allow
for more informed business decisions through
analytics, SAP said in a press release.
CenterPoint Energy, which delivers power to
more than 2.3 million consumers in six states,
collects electronic meter data every 15 minutes
for energy use reporting—and that means hefty
data-storage costs.
In six weeks, SAP and CenterPoint Energy
built a testing environment that processed
more than 5 billion data records with Hadoop,
HANA and HANA Vora, according to SAP.
After that successful test deployment, Cen-
terPoint Energy opted to implement and stan-
dardize on the HANA big data platforms. “Our
initial analysis proved that SAP HANA paired

with SAP HANA Vora is the right solution for
us moving forward operationally,” said Gary
Hayes, CIO and senior vice president of Cen-
terPoint Energy, in a statement.

Khan said. The end result is “much more of a

HANA Vora sits as a “first-class citizen” inside
of the Spark foundation, allowing SAP to either
push down very specific types of analytical
workloads into Spark storage or bring back
contextual information into the transactional
core to provide much more meaningful insight
to customers, Khan said.
From a big data analytics perspective, the
main challenge with in-memory systems such
as HANA is the cost-to-value ratio, Dolphin’s

Hopf said. Main memory is expensive, and
enterprises quickly reach a data volume where
the cost simply outweighs the benefits of the
analyses they can do for various scenarios.
That’s why adding Hadoop support was
essential in making HANA big data practical,
according to Hopf. Incorporating some of the
HANA database technology in the HANA Vora
analytics front end and having it sit on top of
Hadoop and Spark “allows customers to run
high-performance analytics on subsets of data
that can be stored in fairly massive Hadoop
data lakes,” he explained.
GETTING A VIEW OF DATA
According to Moxie, combining HANA Vora
with Hadoop and Spark is a big step in giv-
ing businesses full access to all of their data.
As the internet of things (IoT) grows, Spark
will be effective for the distributive process-
ing and extracting of data sets needed for that
sort of work. “Spark is really critical for IoT
applications and analyzing in that sense, but
with HANA Vora you’re able to facilitate a lot
of those new IoT initiatives because companies

can analyze their data a little bit more easily,”
she said.
For example, an SAP customer in the agri-
culture industry is using sensor data in the
field as well as satellite images to predict sugar
cane yields. Both the sensor data and images

He said he expects SAP to clarify its roadmap
for information lifecycle management in the
September 2016 timeframe.
According to Khan, SAP’s HANA big data
strategy will focus on becoming much more
integrated with the open source movement,
using a first-class computing capability in
HANA and HANA Vora to bring more business
capabilities to Spark. “This in itself is a very
meaningful sort of activity for our custom-
ers because no customer wants to operate on
islands of data—they want to have that coher-
ent view, and this is exactly what our focus has

HANA Vora is an in-memory query engine
designed to make big data from Hadoop more
accessible and usable for enterprises. It plugs
into the Apache Spark framework, enabling
companies to run analytics on data that’s
stored in Hadoop. Deploying and running
HANA or HANA Vora, though, can be chal-
lenging. In that context, experts have offered

some best practices to help businesses prepare
to implement and use these tools for big data
projects.
START WITH DEPLOYMENT DECISION
SAP users have the option of deploying HANA
in the cloud or on premises, said Hyoun Park,
chief research officer at Boston-based Blue Hill
Research. Deciding which implementation path
is right for each user depends on how they’re
currently treating their enterprise data. “If an
SAP client believed that it needed to keep its
data secure or could not move it out of the
country for any reason or did not have strong
cloud security and governance capabilities,
then they would typically keep their HANA
instance and their SAP data on premises,” Park
said.
However, many companies are much more
comfortable with the cloud today and have

already put the data and applications necessary
to run their businesses in the cloud. Therefore,
the choice of deploying HANA on premises or
in the cloud is more of a preference based on IT
standards and governance as well as risk man-
agement and compliance, according to Park.

understand that not all data is going to move
from their traditional platforms onto HANA,
said Noel Yuhanna, principal analyst at For-
rester Research. “HANA is a very optimized
platform, especially for memory, so you can’t
just move everything from what you have and
bring the kitchen sink into the HANA plat-
form,” he said.
Because HANA is a very expensive plat-
form, it doesn’t make sense for enterprises to
bring over data that they’re not going to use,

he added. Therefore, organizations have to plan
and understand the data that’s going to sit on
the HANA platform. “If you don’t know your
data in HANA, you may be wasting resources,
and it may be very costly and maybe not even

worth running on HANA,” Yuhanna said. “You
also have to know what kinds of queries you
anticipate asking.”
Working with HANA is like working with a
typical database, Park said, and the necessary
skills are based on what database administra-
tors have been working with for a while.
Selecting a partner to help with the imple-
mentation is also crucial, Williams said. Com-
panies should choose their partners based on
fit with their industries, the intended focuses
of their projects and recommendations from
previous customers. Depending on a company’s

expense, the deployment options will be differ-
ent, Williams explained. It’s also important for
businesses to dedicate the right internal teams
to the project and determine their technical
and organizational readiness for transitioning

success, she added.
VORA CALLS FOR TRAINING, REALIGNMENT
When it comes to deploying HANA Vora, orga-
nizations need to clearly define the require-
ments for their projects because the hardware
recommendations, system landscapes and

configurations depend on doing so, accord-
ing to Williams. She pointed out that the
defined requirements and their dependen-
cies will directly affect the success of their
implementations.
Yuhanna agreed with the need for organiza-
tions to define their user requirements, add-
ing that they shouldn’t integrate HANA with
Hadoop and Spark just because a connector is
available. “I would recommend that the data
architects who are building [on the] HANA
Vora platform look at the use cases of what
they’re going to be achieving with the HANA
Vora implementation,” Yuhanna said. “Is it
going to be internet of things? Are they doing
fraud detection, customer intelligence, cus-
tomer analytics?”
Having an understanding of their data is also
critically important for organizations looking
to implement HANA Vora, said Shawn Brod-
ersen, associate vice president for application
services at HCL Technologies Ltd., a systems
integrator based in Noida, India.
“When you look at the HANA Vora-Hadoop
landscape, and you’re trying to implement on
that, you’re still dealing with the concept of

you access that,” Brodersen said. “There needs
to be a good, integrated data lifecycle manage-
ment strategy.”

will now have a preferred solution for provid-
ing Hadoop to its users. The deal will help SAP
users who want to start using big data, since
they can now work with a combination of Alti-
scale and HANA Vora to connect large amounts
of streaming data to their existing historical
data for greater insights, he added. “If compa-
nies are planning to use Vora,” he noted, “this
is a good opportunity for database administra-
tors to start learning how Apache Spark works
because they will have to start learning how
Hadoop-based data gets processed and ana-

Is there a particular message about big data that
the film The Human Face of Big Data addresses?
If you go back two or three years ago, we
were trying to figure out how we generate

conversations with our customers around big
data. They were treating big data as a data
problem for IT, and we were looking for new
ways to show big data as a huge business
opportunity, not just a technology “challenge.”
We were looking for ways to bring that con-
versation up, because the business folk had
essentially newspaper-level knowledge of big
data—they read about it in an article some-
where. They had a basic idea of what big data is,
and the IT guys had a very technical view of big
data. And so how do you broker those groups
to the table within an organization and provide
a common framework or common language
around understanding big data? We thought
that the film was a fantastic way to make that
happen.
Have those conversations resulted now because
of the film?
It has very much fulfilled that goal. Every time

we’ve done a screening, there’s been a request
for another screening. Either someone sees the
film and decides that they have to show it to
such and such executive in this department, or
we need to bring it to this customer and so on.
When we’ve done a lot of these events, what

What questions do people have about big data?
Even though people have been talking about big
data for some time in the tech industry, there
are still many people that don’t have a good
or deep understanding of the human implica-
tions of big data. How is this transforming
how I work, play and live? Often the ques-
tions start off very personal—“What does this

mean for me personally in my own personal
life?”—whether it’s questions around privacy
and what they do online and in terms of the
information that’s shared or what it means
from a health perspective for them. Often those
questions move over to “How do we leverage
this within our company? What does this look
like in terms of how we change the way we do
business or interact with our customers?” The
questions are typically not very deeply techni-
cal in nature, but when you understand how
you want to use it, how you want to change the
way you do business, then the technical comes
out of that.  
How should businesses go about exploring a
big data opportunity?
One of the things that we’ve often said at SAP
is that the right approach to pursuing a big
data opportunity is to first define problems
or use cases that tightly align with the busi-
ness. You want to start with a business dis-
cussion, and, typically, when we’ve shown the
film it sparks that conversation. The next step
is to have a workshop where we use design
thinking methodologies to uncover what the

business imperatives are and where places are
where big data might be applied. Once you have
a good first use case or two that would have a
real impact on your business, then it gets down
to saying we have some idea of the insights that
can be found within that, so you bring in a data

science group to help figure that out. The next

Are there any differences in approaches to big data
between companies that already have SAP and
those that don’t?
Probably the biggest difference is that compa-
nies that already run SAP have a comfort level
with SAP so they will tend to work to build
their big data solution around SAP’s capabili-
ties and platform. Whereas customers that
don’t really use SAP today will often be pulled
in by the capabilities around HANA and what it
can do around different areas.

Are companies seeing value in big data's ability
to solve business problems?
Everything is a progression, and we’ve defi-
nitely seen progressions overall with digital
transformation. Big data does not exist in
isolation, but what big data and IoT [internet
of things] do online as far as how they interact
with customers at some level fits into an
overall digital transformation of the organiza-
tion and how they play within their industry.
Companies still have a long way to go in terms
of getting to places of true big data maturity,
but [there are] definitely a larger number
data?”
Are there industries leading the way in
implementing big data applications?
We’ve seen the use cases cross all over. In the
film itself, it talks a lot about healthcare, so
we’re seeing a lot of interest and take-up in the
healthcare field. Genome sequencing is really
a big data problem, where you’re taking mas-
sive data sets and comparing them. A lot of the
use cases tend to be around “How do I do what
I’m doing today, but just better?” For example,

a company looks to adopt predictive mainte-
nance, which, in many ways, is a big data chal-
lenge. I want to monitor the signals coming
off my machinery and decide whether it’s
about to fail so that I can predict that and
reduce downtime. In the retail space, it’s

add to that. So there are definitely concepts out
there, but that’s an evolution in their business
model that will take time. Most of what we see
are companies saying they won’t change the
business model, but will change the way they
interact with customers. So the changes have
been somewhat incremental for companies up
until this point. But big data is fundamental to
