Presentation Guide

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE PRESENTATION

How much time do I have?

What is the venue?

What is the audience? What is their background?

Why was I asked to speak? What do they expect of me?

What do I want the audience to do?

What is the fundamental purpose of my task?

TWO FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

What is my central point?

Why does it matter?

SIMPLIFY TO AMPLIFY

A presentation is never just about the facts: the goal is to connect with the
audience.

To connect, need to keep things simple. Don’t try to cram too much.

Show restraint, use white space

SLIDE DESIGN: FOUR BASIC PRINCIPLES

Images, not text, should be the focus on the slides.

Contrast (especially colors, but also shapes, sizes)

Repetition (repeat a theme or motif or image from one slide to next)

Alignment (divide slide into thirds, and try to avoid placing things right in the
middle)

DELIVERY

Most important rule: Do not read slides with your back to the audience!

what you are saying

Make eye contact with the audience, and speak as if you are having a
