To check the efficiencies of coagulants

1
Experiment :- 5

➢ Aim: -
To check the efficiencies of coagulants

➢ Chemicals used: -

i. Clay
ii. Alum
iii. FeSO4

➢ Methodology: -

i. To study the efficiency of FeSO4 and alum as coagulants, the rate of

sedimentation vs. type of coagulant used is studied.
ii. Clays which act as negatively charged particles, form a colloidal solution and
exhibit Brownian motion.
iii. Addition of coagulants nullify the charge and lead to formation of sticky ppt.
iv. Thus Coagulants are added so as it fastens the sedimentation process.

➢ Observation:-

i. 100 ml Clay solution was prepared.

ii. 1g of Alum and FeSO4 were added at the same time.
iii. Rate of sedimentation was studied for seven minutes.
iv. Fig. 1 and 2 shows the sedimentation after 7 min.
v. It is seen that rate of sedimentation of the solution containing alum is greater
than that of FeSO4.
