Experiment 3 Electrolytic conductance and variation of conductance with

concentration

Objective: To understand the physical principles and practical aspects of study

of the electrolytic conductance and of the variation of conductance with
concentration (Onsager’s Equation) and determine the solubility product
constants of PbSO4 and limiting molar conductivity.

(A) Determination of solubility product constants of PbSO 4

Solution Conductivity (Scm-1)

H2O 1.7 uScm-1

PbSO4 45.1 uScm-1

(B) Variation of Conductance with Concentration

Weight of NaCl taken for preparing 0.1M NaCl (g) 0.5850

Concentration of NaCl solution Conductivity (Scm-1)

0.1 M 9900 uScm-1

0.05 M 5130 uScm-1

0.025 M 2630 uScm-1

0.0125 M 1364 uScm-1

0.00625M 693 uScm-1

0.003125M 356 uScm-1

Constant temperature = ___25.0______ C

Data treatment:
A.
Conductivity of the ions:
(45.1-1.7) µScm-1 = 43.4µScm-1
Concentration:
43.4 / 151.8 = 0.286M
Ksp = C2
Ksp = 0.0818mol2L-6
