Excavation and backfilling of pipe trench, This project involved the installation of 3 nos.
both above and underwater, for seawater intakes, including the design of
installation of seawater intake pipes concrete anchor blocks, for the Power and
including installation of temporary earth Desalination Plant New ‘B’ Extension in
support Taweelah, UAE. Since the construction works
Laying 48m long of 3 x 2.8m diameter have to be carried out in the existing basin of
GRP seawater intake pipes including the desalination plant, maintaining the water
design and installation of associated quality of the basin was a major concern. To
intake anchor blocks prevent the pollution of the nearby water in
Design, fabrication and installation of the basin, silt curtain with double layer was
double silt curtain prior to any designed and installed to enclose the works
dredging/excavation works area. To further minimize the disturbance to
Reinstatement of existing basin side the existing basin, it was proposed to precast
slope after completion of pipe the concrete anchor blocks on site. Each
installation/backfilling works anchor block weighted more than 90 ton and
by making use the buoyancy force, they were
lifted and installed underwater by a 500-ton
mobile hydraulic crane sitting on temporary
steel H-piles driven near the edge of the
temporary cut slope. Subsequent intake
pipes were installed underwater by divers. It
has proven that the double layer silt curtain
was performed very well with no deterioration
of water quality observed during the course
of construction.
