Lesson Intro:
● Ask students to raise their hand if they’ve ever heard of
non-renewable resources.
Explore:
1. Distribute cookies to students (DO NOT EAT THEM)
3. With the cookie flat on the desk and without picking it up,
ask students to estimate the number of chips in their
cookie.
Discussion:
● Use the T-Chart on the board to help answer questions.
○ Which students did the most damage to the Earth?
(ones with most squares covered)
○ Which students make the most money from their
mining operations? (ones with most extracted
chips)
● When you first put your cookie down on the grid, did you
consider what natural attributes you’d be covering?
○ What was your reasoning for the cookie’s
placement?
Wrap-Up:
Talk about the importance of recycling.
