CME 306 – CHEMICAL REACTION KINETICS & ENGINEERING

Spring Semester 2020

Assignment: Ten
Date Assigned: Friday, April 3, 2020
Date Due: Wednesday, April 22, 2020
Basis: Group (one to three people), Take-Home
Weight: 30 points

Reading: Chapter 8 (focus on Sections 1 through 5)

Problems: 11, 16, and 21 of Chapter 8

Note the nature of each problem (analysis, design, etc.).

Note at least one key concept that you learned from solving each problem.

Hints: Problem 11 – Note that it is desired to produce species S, the terminal product
(while Problem 10 considers the case of the intermediate product, species R, being
desired).

Problem 16 – At first glance this may not seem like a kinetics problem, but it is.
Remember that a few gambling scenarios were treated like kinetics problems in
Chapter 3 (specifically, Problems 3.7 and 3.13). The key to starting the solution is
identifying the rate equations that should be used to model the power shovel’s
transfer of gravel from the initial pile (species A) into the hopper/bin (species R)
and the belt conveyor’s transfer of the gravel from the hopper/bin to the new pile
(species S). Hints concerning the nature of the rate equations are given in the
problem statement.

Problem 21 – This is a modification of the basic A → R → S series reaction

scheme in which species R reacts to form two terminal products (R → S and R →
T). This topic is treated in Section 8.7, but can also be analyzed by modifying the
equations developed in Section 8.1.
