“OPERAUNO" is a short cycle of 6 studies designed for both teaching and concert purposes. The reason
that led me to write this work was my considerable interest in movement and its simple or complex relationships with
sound and rhythm. Indeed, I do not believe it possible 1 ignore such aspects when introducing a pupil to playing the
iano or to music in general, and I always feel rather uneasy when faced withthe ascetic composure of a pupil who has
‘not developed an awareness ofthis relationship or of the importance of his/her own weight and mass, resources that call
for movements designed to satisfv the rhythmic and sonorous requirements of phrasing
The alternate-hand method prevalently used in these studies is designed to bring into play the question of
lysical and mental balance when moving hands and arms, and as such necessarily calls fora flexibility of the wrist,
while developing a perception of weight as a propulsive, medial element in vertical, transversal and longitudinal
‘movements. At the same time, although the ever-important liveliness of planists' fingers is not to be neglected, it should
nt be considered the only resource they possess, whatever level they may Be at
In order to simplify the reading and study of his cyele, the music has been written in an extremely schematic
way, designed to produce a gratifring instrumental effect throughs the use of devices such as the skating over the black
cand white keys, the repetition of notes, the crossing over of hands right across the keyboard and also the use of the
sostenuito pedal
Despite the fact thatthe music is more or tess free of any tonal idea, the 6 studies are characterised by a
considerable expressive charge. Inthe second study, ample room is conceded to agogie-dymamic initiative and, thanks 0
the unwritien cadenza, fo a personal elaboration of the instrumental mechanisms aecording 10 the manipulation of the
‘music rather than to any mere faithful reproduction of the score. The fourth study, dedicated to the sostenuto pedal, is
resented in two versions: the first, an extremely simple version, should be considered an elementary approach designed
to discover the existence of the sostenuto pedal and how it works; the second version, included in the append, is almast
identical to the first from the point of musical content, although it introduces the effect of the resonance of latent
harmonies, obtained by pressing the keys without making them sound or by playing them very softly. and is prevalently
designed for concert use. The final study is preceded by a harmonic scheme summarising the sequence of harmonies
subsequently developed right across the keyboard, and is designed to make it easier to read and, above all, to underline
its simplicity so as not fo discourage pupils from trying, Finally, I would lite o point out that the first study may also be
played by inverting the two hands, that is, By playing the erotchets with the right hand and the semiiguavers withthe left
‘As well as lending a different sound to the piece, this can also be of use from the technical point of view.
