Teddy Bear
with crochet­trim cardigan

This sweet and lovable little teddy bear is the perfect size for a young child. Of course, teddies are good
for kids of any age! If you make the teddy from cotton, acrylic, or washable wool, you can even throw it
in the washing machine (on delicate, since teddies are sensitive). Embroider the eyes with some black
yarn to make the toy suitable for a baby or toddler. Happy knitting!
Teddy Bear
Yarn: 50g of worsted weight yarn
Needles and Notions: pair of 4 mm (US size 6)
knitting needles, small amount of black yarn for
embroidery, 2 small black buttons or safety eyes,
stuffing, tapestry needle
Gauge: 5.5 sts and 7 rows to 2.5 cm (1”) in st st
Size: approximately 20 cm (8”) tall
Legs (make 2)
Begin at foot. CO 10 sts.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: k1, [m1, k1] to end. (19 sts)
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: k3, [m1, k4] x 4. (23 sts)
Rows 5-7: Work 3 rows in st st.
Row 8: k7, [ssk] x 2, [k2tog] x 2, k8. (19 sts)
Row 9: p6, [p2tog] x 2, [p2tog tbl] x 2, p5. (15 sts)
Row 10: k6, k2tog, k7. (14 sts)
Rows 11-13: Work 3 rows in st st.
Row 14: k1, m1, k12, m1, k1. (16 sts)
Rows 15-25: Work 11 rows in st st.
Row 26: [k2 tog] x 8. (8 sts)
Break off yarn. Thread end through remaining
stitches, pull tight to gather. Gather together cast-on
stitches, then sew back leg seam, leaving an
opening. Stuff leg, then sew seam closed.
Body
Begin at neck edge. CO 16 sts.

Row 8: k1, [m1, k3] x 8. (33 sts)

the eye positions)

Row 21: Purl.

Break off yarn. Thread end through remaining
stitches, pull tight to gather. Attach safety eyes or
buttons now. Sew partway towards CO. Gather
together cast-on stitches, then sew seam towards
nose, leaving an opening. Stuff head, then sew
seam closed.
Ears (make 2)
CO 4 sts.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: k1, m1, k2, m1, k1. (6 sts)
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: k1, m1, k4, m1, k1. (8 sts)
Row 5-9: Knit 5 rows in g-st.
Bind off.
Break off yarn, leaving a long end for sewing ear to
head.
Toy Finishing
Sew head securely to open neck edge of body
(seam runs under the head, from nose to back). Sew
bound-off edge of ears to head (see photo for
placement). With black yarn, embroider nose and
mouth. Also embroider the eyes with black yarn if
the toy is for a very young child.
To attach the arms: thread a length (45 cm/18”) of
yarn through body at shoulder position on one side
(side seam, 2.5 cm/1” below the upper body edge)
exiting at the same position on the other side of the
body. Thread your yarn through the top of one arm,
make a short stitch, then thread the yarn back
through the arm and the body, to your starting
position. Thread the yarn through the second arm,
make a short stitch, then thread the yarn back
through the second arm to the other side of the
body. Pull on the yarn gently to tighten the arms to
the body. Then pass the yarn through the arms and
body 3-4 more times, in the same manner as before,
finishing where you began. Tie a secure knot with
the yarn ends, and weave them into the body.
Attach the legs to the body in the same way, 2.5
cm/1” from the lower body edge. (Note: this
method makes jointed arms. For a simpler method,
sew the tops of the arms and legs in position with
several whip stitches.)

Cardigan
Yarn: 25 g of DK weight yarn (MC), 5 g of sport-
DK weight yarn for crochet trim (CC, optional)
Needles and Notions: pair of 4 mm (US size 6)
knitting needles, tapestry needle, row markers and
stitch holder or scrap yarn, crochet hook size
needed for CC (optional)
Gauge: 5.5 sts and 7 rows to 2.5 cm (1”) in st st
Size: 19 cm (7 ½”) around, 9 cm (3”) long
Note
If you don’t want to graft the shoulders, you can
bind off the last row of the back and fronts, and
sew them instead.
Back
CO 25 sts with MC.
Rows 1-3: k1, [p1, k1] across.
Rows 4-13: Beg with a RS row, work 10 rows st st.
Row 14: k1, [k2tog] x 2, k15, [ssk] x 2, k1. (21 sts)
Mark each end of this last row.
Row 15: Purl.
Row 16: k1, k2tog, k15, ssk, k1. (19 sts)
Row 17-25: Work 9 rows in st st.
Row 26: k5, bind off 9 sts, k5.
Break off yarn leaving a long end. Place the 12
live stitches on a stitch holder or scrap yarn.
Right Front
CO 13 sts with MC.
Rows 1-3: k1, [p1, k1] across.
Row 4: k1, p1, k11.
Row 5: k1, p1, k1, p10.
Row 6-13: Repeat Rows 4-5 four times.
Row 14: k1, p1, k6, [ssk] x 2, k1. (11 sts)
Mark last st of the last row.
Row 15: k1, p1, k1, p8.
Row 16: k1, p1, k9.
Row 17-24: Repeat Rows 15-16 four times.
Row 25: p6, bind off to end. (6 sts)
Attach yarn to remaining sts.
Row 26: ssk, k4. (5 sts)
Break off yarn. Place the 5 live stitches on a stitch
holder or scrap yarn.
Left Front
CO 13 sts with MC.
Rows 1-3: k1, [p1, k1] across.
Row 4: k11, p1, k1.
Row 5: p10, k1, p1, k1.
Row 6-13: Repeat Rows 4-5 four times.
Row 14: k1, [k2tog] x 2, k6, p1, k1. (11 sts)
Mark last st of the last row.
Row 15: p8, k1, p1, k1.
Row 16: k9, p1, k1.
Row 17-24: Repeat Rows 15-16 four times.
Row 25: bind off 5 sts, k to end. (6 sts)
Row 26: k4, k2tog. (5 sts)
Break off yarn. Place the 5 live stitches on a stitch
holder or scrap yarn.
Shoulders
Place live stitches from back right shoulder onto
one needle, and live stitches from right front onto
second needle. Graft together with kitchener stitch.
Repeat for left shoulder.
Sleeves (same for right and left)
With MC yarn and RS of garment facing you, pick
up 19 sts between markers on front and back.
Rows 1-8: Work 8 rows in st st.
Rows 9-11: k1, [p1, k1] to end.
Bind off.
Sew together sleeve seams from cuff to underarm.
Sew side seams from hem to underarm. Weave in
all yarn ends.
Crochet Trim
(My crochet skills are mimimal, so this is just a
guide to how to finish the cardigan. If you can’t
follow these directions, try embroidering a blanket
stitch around the edges. Or leave the cardigan
plain, and just add ribbon or yarn ties at the neck)
With your CC and crochet hook, and beginning at
one of the side seams of the hem, work a row of
single crochet around the hem, front edges, and
neck of the cardigan. Beginning at the underarm
seam, work a row of single crochet around both
cuffs. Add single-crochet ties at the neck, about 8
cm (3”) long. Weave in all the yarn ends.
Abbreviations
[ ] x N = repeat sequence in brackets N times ("to
end" means to repeat until the end of the row)
K or k = knit
k2tog = decrease 1 st by knitting 2 together
m1 = make one st by picking up loop between
stitch just worked and next stitch, and knit into the
back of this loop
P or p = purl
p2tog = purl 2 together
ssk = decrease 1 by slipping 2 stitches purl-wise,
then knit slipped stitches together
st or sts = stitch or stitches
st st = stockinette stitch
tbl = through back of loop(s)
