Calibre Digital produces special effects for TV producer's shows
TORONTO -- Atlantis Communications Inc. has purchased a 50-per-cent stake in the company that produces
special effects and animation for its television shows.
Chairman Michael MacMillan told the annual meeting yesterday that Atlantis acquired the stake in Calibre Digital
Pictures for a modest investment.
"This acquisition represents a low-risk, high-potential entry point into the exciting animation business," he said.
He told reporters later that the amount Atlantis paid was less than Calibre's projected 1997 revenue of about $4-
million. Toronto-based Atlantis has an option to acquire all of Calibre within two years, he said.
With the cash injection from Atlantis, Calibre, which has been a service producer for third parties, will begin to
develop animation projects that it will own.
Neil Williamson, Calibre's president, founder and creative director, said after the meeting that his Toronto-based
company has already been working on two children's series.
Calibre will continue to provide special effects for Atlantis' series The Adventures of Sinbad and Gene
Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict , a new fall series licenced to Baton Broadcasting Inc. in Canada and
syndicated by Tribune Entertainment in the United States.
Mr. MacMillan told shareholders that Atlantis plans to use its Life Network as a base for a family of special-interest
Atlantis Releasing, the company's distribution arm, is also expanding. It recently became the Canadian distributor
for several CBS Inc. products, including 60 Minutes and Steven Bocho's latest effort, Brooklyn South , which will be
aired in the fall. Atlantis has also become involved in international distribution of shows made by others. For
example, it's distributing the new U.S. series Night Man in continental Europe as well as Canada.
Atlantis doubled its profit in the first quarter of 1997 to $1-million on revenue of $31.9-million. For the year ended
Dec. 31, 1996, profit climbed to $6.9-million from a loss of $10.5-million a year earlier. Revenue totalled $138-
million, compared with $137-million.
Mr. MacMillan attributed the results to a more commercial production slate. The company's four major series last
year -- Traders , The Adventures of Sinbad , Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal and The Outer Limits -- have
all been renewed.
