Industrial Profile of Bahraich district
1. General characteristics of the district:
There are many mythological descriptions about the great historical value of district
Bahraich. It was famous as the capital of God Brahma, the creator of universe. It was
also known as part of Gandharva forest. Even today north east area of several hundred
square kms of the district is covered by the forest. It is said that Lord Brahma developed
this forest-covered area as the place of worship for saints and sages. Therefore, this
place was known as ‘Brahmaich’. According to some historians, in the middle age this
place was the capital of ''Bhar '' dynasty. Therefore it was called as Bahraich.
The economy of Bahraich district is mainly agrarian in nature. The principal crops of the
region are wheat, rice, sugarcane, pulse, and mustard. Sericulture is another
occupation of the people of the region. Bahraich is not industrially developed. Most of
the industries in this region are based on agricultural and forest products. Bahraich is
one of the 21 districts of Uttar Pradesh having minority concentration and considered to
be backward.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area:
District Bahraich is situated in the northern part of Devipatan Division and lies between
280.24’ and 270.4’ N latitude and 81065’ to 8103’ eastern longitudes. It has an
international border with Nepal on the northern side, districts Barabanki and Sitapur are
in south, Kheri in west and Gonda and Srawasti are in eastern side of the district. Total
geographical area of the district is 4696.8 Sq. Km. Northern part of the district is Tarai
region which is covered by the dense natural forest. The soil of the district is fertile. Due
to fertile nature of land greenery is spread throughout the district.
3
1.2 Topography:
Rivers have played a significant role in the development of Bahraich. Ghaghara is the
main river flowing through the district, formed from the combined waters of the Kauriala,
Saryu, and Chauka and other rivers which drain the sub-mountain tract to the west. It
enters the district in the extreme west and flows along the southern borders. Within its
wide bed it rolls from one side to the other, changing its course almost every year. The
land along the river banks gets eroded during the rains and for this reason the area of
the district is liable to annual variations. Saryu is the second most important river, rising
in the district, and joining the Ghaghara in Bahraich. The Kuwano River flows along the
northern border, with the Bisuha, a small stream of a similar character. The soils of the
district are composed of the fluvial deposits of these rivers. The entire district falling in
sai sub basin of Bahraich represents flat topography.
There are several important lakes in the district, including the Banki, Kodar, Aranga, and
Parwati & Pathri.
This district is poor in availability of minerals. Though few minor minerals like sand and
Kankar are found which are mainly used in construction of buildings.
1.4 Forest:
The district has 67926 hectares of total forest cover which is 13.97% of Total Area of
District. Trees like teak, shesham, saal, eucalyptus, bamboo, etc. are found.
Bahraich town is the district headquarters and administrative centre for the Devipatan
division. It has 4 tehsils: Bahraich, Mehsi, Kaiserganj and Nanpara. There are 14
numbers of development blocks. It has 2 lok sabha costituencies and 7 assembly areas.

Bahraich is well known for its sugar Industries which have registered positive growth in
the recent past. There are six sugar mills situated in Jarwal ,Balha Nanpara, Chilawaria
& Kaisharganj. All of them are doing quite well.
9
3.7 Vendorisation / Ancillarisation of the Industry
.All the sugar mills are procuring sugar cane directly from the local growers where as
they are getting the supply of spare parts, components and other consumable stores
from outside Bahraich. There is good scope for supply of parts and components by the
local micro and small enterprises.

Nearly two-third of the area has been under plough and around 82.0 per cent of main
workers depend on agriculture. Major crops of the district are wheat, paddy and maize
as cereals, Masoor among pulses and sugarcane and potato as commercial crops.
Bahraich is well known for Masoor pulses and parwal and tomatoes which are being
exported to within State of Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country. Cultivators can
be educated to diversify their activities wherever possible. Dairying, Mushroom
cultivation, Poultry farming, cultivation of zinger and parwal, masoor pulses can be
promoted in various blocks of the district.
Bahraich is also climatically suited for sericulture development.
Bahraich district has about 14.0 per cent area under forests which is just double to State
average. It is therefore desirable to take up commercial forestry seriously by growing
more seesam, khairs, popular, eucalyptus, bamboo and jatropha, so that plywood;
katha, furniture and other forest based industries can be developed through these
species. In tarai area of tehsil Nanpara and Bahraich there is a scope to develop forest
based industries like timber and wood products. Kattha, Dona and Pattal,Bee
keeping,etc.
Around 65.0 per cent rural and 51.0 per cent urban households depend on firewood for
cooking. The next important source of cooking is crop residues (29.0 per cent) and cow-
dung cake 4.4 per cent) in rural areas. It offers opportunity for setting up of ‘Smokeless
Briquettes’ manufacturing plants and bio- gas units.
10
(c) Dairy Development
The Bahraich district has sizable milch cattle. Therefore there is need to introduce milk
routes, develop chilling plants, arrange markets for sale and purchase of good breed
animals, assure regular supply of good quality of animal feed and need to increase
proper veterinary services.
Among SC/ST population rearing of sheep, goats and pigs are generally popular.
However this activity has not been taken up on sound commercial lines although the
potential to develop it is very much present in the district. Through better quality of
sheep rearing wool based activities also can be developed.
(e) Fisheries
As there are numerous ponds, reservoirs and rivers pisciculture can be developed in the
district. To give a proper impetus to develop pisciculture there is need to set up cold
storage facilities, plants producing fish feed and mandi for marketing of fish.
At present, there is no unit manufacturing milk products in the district. There is immense
potential for such units.
Vegetables like Parwal and tomato and pulses like masoor and pea has potential in the
district because these items are already being sold in other part of the country. These
crops offer opportunity for setting up food processing units.
Among forest based industry there is good scope to develop plywood factories, furniture
industry and handicraft items like wooden toys, show pieces, mementoes and other
utility articles.
Irregular power supply in the district provides scope for manufacturing, supply and
repairing of batteries, inverters, solar cell assemblies, etc.
As the level of literacy in Bahraich district is very low. Facilities for higher and technical
education are also inadequate. Thus, there is very good prospect for new schools,
colleges and institutions for technical education, vocational training and coaching
centers.
11
The district lags behind with respect to medical facilities as compared with the prescribe
norms laid down for establishment of Public Health Care and Child Health Care centers.
Therefore, there is potential for setting up of facilities for medical, nursing and health
care services.
