Make the sign of the cross when you see this sign unless otherwise instructed.
Redactor’s Note: Adapted from the old rite of Baptism of Adults from the 1952 Roman Ritual
With the thumb the faithful traces the sign of the Cross on the following parts of the body,
saying:
Signing the brow. I sign myself on the brow that I may accept the Cross of
the Lord.
Signing each ear. I sign myself on the ears that I may hearken to the divine
precepts.
Signing each eye. I sign myself on the eyes that I may see the grandeur of
God.
Signing each nostril. I sign myself on the nostrils that I may perceive the
sweet fragrance of Christ.
Signing the mouth. I sign myself on the mouth that I may utter the words of
life.
Signing of the chest. I sign myself on the chest that I may believe in God.

Signing each shoulder. I sign myself on the shoulders that I may take upon
you the yoke of His service.
Redactor’s Note: The remaining two body parts are optional. They are not part of the rite
but have been included to underline the use of the hands and feet in the service of God.
Signing each palm of the hands. I sign myself on the hands that I may work
to glorify His holy name.
Signing each of the feet. I sign myself on the feet that I may walk in His
ways.
The faithful then traces the sign of the Cross the usual way, without touching the body,
saying:
I sign my whole being, in the name of the Father , and of the Son , and of
the Holy Spirit, that I may have life everlasting and may I live forever and
ever. Amen.
Reverently signing themselves with the Sign of the Cross, the faithful says with conviction
and faith:
or
By the sign of the Cross, may our God deliver me from the enemy.
