GRAMMAR LESSON PLAN

Time: 20 min.
Level: Pre- Intermediate
Gender: F/M
Age: 12/13
Materials: Pictures, Handouts.
Interaction: T/Ss – Ss/T
Assumptions: Ss know “Present Simple”,” Wh Questions”.
Anticipated Problems: Time management can be a problem, Students can be
confused.

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the students
1) Will have covered “expressing actions which is more important than agent in
present,
2) Will have understood the positive form of passive sentences,
3) Will have turned active sentences into passive sentences in present form,
4) Will have understood the difference between active sentence and passive
sentence.

WARM-UP
Time: 3 min.
Materials: Pictures.
Interaction: T/Ss
What students do: The students look at the pictures and answer the questions the
teacher asked.
Grouping: Whole class
Aims:
- To motivate students to get to the topic.
- To make connection between the topic and things mentioned.

STEPS
1) The teacher shows some pictures which is related to Christmas.
2) The teacher asks questions about pictures: “what do you see on the pictures?,
what do people do on Christmas?, in our country, is Christmas important?.

LEAD-IN TO CONTEXT
Time: 3 min.
Materials: Handout.
Interaction: T/Ss
What students do: Students read the text to understand it; Students answer the
questions according to the text
Grouping: Whole class
Aims:
- To provide students to understand the text,
- To get the students’ attention to the passive form with the questions.
STEPS
1) The teacher asks questions about the reading text : “what do the Hungarians
eat on Christmas Eve?, What do Venezuela people do with the other end of
string?, what about Syria people, what do they do at mass on Christmas Day?”
2) Teacher gets the answers from the students and writes both of them on the
board.

ELICITATION
A) MEANING
Time: 2 min.
Materials: Board
Interaction: T/Ss – Ss/Ss
What students do: Students look at the sentences on the board and answers the
questions teacher has asked.
Grouping: Whole class
Aims:
- To provide students understand the meaning of the sentences.
- To have students get the meaning.

STEPS
1) Teacher shows two sentences on the board and ask some questions about
them such as ; “In which country do people eat fresh fish with rice or potatoes
on Christmas Eve?”, “Who eats fresh fish with rice or potatoes on Christmas
Eve?”,
2) Teacher asks some questions again about the second sentence. “Who sings
the hymns?”, “Are hymns action or object?

B) FORM
Time: 2 min.
Materials: Broad
Interaction: T/ Ss – Ss/Ss
What students do: Students look at the sentences on the board and answers the
questions teacher has asked.
Grouping: Whole class
Aims:
- To get the students to understand the form of the sentences.
- To get the students to understand the order of passive form.

STEPS
1) Ask some questions about the sentences such as; “What is the subject? What
comes after the subject? Is the verb bare or...?”
2) Ask the same questions for the second sentence.

C) FUNCTION
Time: 2 min.
Materials: Board
Interaction: T/ Ss – Ss/Ss
What students do: Students answer the question related with the function of the
sentences.
Grouping: Whole class
Aims:
- To get the students to understand what the usage of passive sentences.

STEPS
1) Teacher asks question “In which situation do we use these sentences?”
2) Teacher can ask some extra questions if the students can’t understand.

RESTRICTED USE ACTIVITY


Time: 2 min.
Materials: Handout
Interaction: T/ Ss – Ss/Ss
What students do: Students read the sentences in the worksheet. And try to fill in
the blanks according to the verbs in the parentheses.
Grouping: Whole group
Aims:
- To get the students to practise what they have learned.
- To get the students to understand the differences between active and passive
sentences.

STEPS
1) Teacher gives the students handout and wants them to write the correct form
of the verbs.
2) After students finish answering the questions, teacher checks the answers.

AUTHENTIC USE ACTIVITY


Time: 4 min.
Materials: Cards, pictures, some papers.
Interaction: Ss/Ss, T/Ss
What students do: students work in groups and try to make a cake with the help of
the pictures, verbs and they have to use passive in the sentences.
Grouping: Six groups
Aims:
- To want students to use passive forms of the sentences.
- To get the students to produce what they have learned by the help of their
friends.

STEPS
1) Teacher wants sts to work in six groups and they will make a cake by using
the words given by the teacher.
2) Students use the passive forms of the words and they put the pictures in order
and write the sentences near the pictures.

WRAP-UP
Time: 2 min.
Materials: Handout
Interaction: T/Ss
What students do: Students look at the chart and talk about it.
Grouping: Whole class
Aims:
- To help students to summarise what they have learned.
- To get the students to understand the topic in a whole.

STEPS
1) Teacher gives handout including the chart of passive forms.
2) Teacher wants students to explain the forms with their own sentences.
