Literature Survey When You Look at A Literature (Publications) at A Surface Level, or We Can Say
Part (a)
1. What is literature survey?
“Literature review is defined as selection of available documents on the topic, which contain
information, ideas, data and evidence written from a particular standpoint to fulfill certain aims
or express certain views on the nature of the topic and how it is to be investigated, and effective
evaluation of these documents in relation to the research being purposed” (Hart,1998,p 13)
Literature survey when you look at a literature (publications) at a surface level, or we can say
that the “Ariel view” of the literature. In this we survey place, people and publications in the
context of the Research. The researchers tries to find out or make sure that all literature is related
to one area of interest. The relevant literatures are the scrutinized and then short-listed. Basically
a literature survey guides or helps or gives direction to the researcher so that they can define, find
out and identify a problem.
Evaluation of the present research condition of the subject. In this we assess that what
and how much is already known about the topic or the project that we have chosen or
selected. For example if we choose to do our literature survey on “Mexico Crisis” we can
have a lot of work already done on this area and we can have a lot of assistance through
those articles. But if we go for total new topic it would be a risk.
To ensure that you have good understanding of the project or the topic.
Enables you to setup your own Theoretical framework and Methodologies focus.
Justifies your reason behind the research.
To carve out a space for further research by identifying the gaps that needed to be filled
To avoid two pitfalls that are misrepresenting and misplagiarism.
Justify the explanation that is basically based on the empirical result outcome.
