Vocabulary teaching strategy is a strategy that can help learners to learn
and enrich their English vocabularies. This research is conducted to investigate
and reveal the vocabulary teaching strategies applied by the EFL teacher to the
seventh-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Jayapura. This study belongs to
qualitative research. The researcher conducted this study as a non-participant
observer and used observation, interview, and questionnaire in gathering the data.
The result shows that the teacher implemented realia, word associations, semantic
feature analysis, memory strategy, and determination strategy as the vocabulary
teaching strategies to teach the seventh-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah
Jayapura. Moreover, the teacher decided to use those teaching strategies because
they are easy to be implemented and suitable for the students’ ability. The
implementations of the vocabulary teaching strategies applied by the EFL teacher
are exactly the same as she does in other classes because the learning materials are
the same and the EFL teacher intends to know the students’ ability and
participations in each class by using the same implementations of each vocabulary
teaching strategy. The students’ perceptions toward the vocabulary teaching
strategies implemented by the teacher are positive. In short, vocabulary teaching
strategy plays a crucial part in teaching and learning process to help the learners
enrich their English vocabularies.

Strategi pengajaran kosa-kata adalah strategi yang dapat membantu pelajar
untuk belajar dan memperkaya kosa-kata bahasa Inggris mereka. Penelitian ini
dilakukan untuk menyelidiki dan mengungkap strategi pengajaran kosa-kata yang
diterapkan oleh guru bahasa asing kepada siswa kelas tujuh di SMP
Muhammadiyah Jayapura dan termasuk dalam penelitian kualitatif. Peneliti
melakukan penelitian ini sebagai pengamat non-partisipan dan menggunakan
metode observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner dalam mengumpulkan data. Hasil
penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru menerapkan realia, word associations,
semantic feature analysis, memory strategy, dan determination strategy sebagai
strategi pengajaran kosa-kata untuk mengajar siswa kelas tujuh di SMP
Muhammadiyah Jayapura. Selain itu, guru memutuskan untuk menggunakan
strategi pengajaran tersebut karena mudah diterapkan dan cocok untuk
kemampuan siswa. Implementasi dari strategi pengajaran kosa-kata yang
diterapkan oleh guru bahasa asing sama persis seperti yang dia lakukan di kelas
lain karena materi pembelajarannya sama dan guru tersebut ingin mengetahui
kemampuan dan partisipasi siswa di setiap kelas dengan menggunakan
implementasi yang sama dari setiap strategi pengajaran kosa-kata. Pendapat siswa
terhadap strategi pengajaran kosa-kata yang diterapkan oleh guru mereka adalah
baik. Kesimpulannya, strategi pengajaran kosa-kata memiliki peran penting dalam
proses belajar mengajar untuk membantu pelajar dalam memperkaya kosa-kata
bahasa Inggris mereka.
