( occupational structure and infrastructure)

1. Bulk of the working population was engaged in agriculture sector about 70 to 75% and
nearly 10% population working in manufacturing sector and 15 to 20% in service sector.
Indian economy was in a state of extreme backwardness.
2. There was a regional variation in occupational structure.
3. Economic and social infrastructure was highly deficient. It was developed only to
facilitate colonial exploitation of Indian economy.
4. Positive side effects of British rule in India were
● Provided transport facilities especially Railways.
● Development of ports.
● Provision of Post and Telegraph services.
● British government gave as a strong and efficient administrative setup.
● Political and economic unification of the country.
