Philippine Agencies linked to DOST

The Philippine Council for Health Research and


Development (PCHRD) is one of the five sectoral councils of the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST). PCHRD is a forward-
looking, partnership-based national body responsible for coordinating and
monitoring health research activities in the country. Since its founding on
17 March 1982 through Executive Order No.784, PCHRD has brought
technical excellence with a soul into fulfilling its mandate.

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) is an


agency in the Philippines that provides data, information and products to
combat malnutrition in the country. Using scientifically sound,
environmentally friendly and globally competitive technologies, FNRI works
toward strengthening Filipinos, both socially and economically, with optimal
nutrition. Founded in 1987, the agency first researches malnutrition, then
formulates policies, strategies, programs and projects to offer solutions to
both public and private sectors as well as other
stakeholders. FNRI develops nutritional products, provides nutrition
updates and analyses, offers nutritional intervention models, promotes and
transfers food and nutrition technologies, and improves human resource
development. 

Forest Products Research and Development Institute


(FPRDI)
This agency was created in 1954 as the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL)
under the then Bureau of Forestry. It was located, as it is now, in the
campus of the University of the Philippines Los Baños-College of Forestry
and Natural Resources (UPLBCFNR).
The Laboratory was established in response to the need for information
and technology on the utilization of timber resources as well as non-wood
forest products. At that time the Philippines was the prime exporter of forest
products in Asia. Conduct research and development on wood and non-
wood forest products.

Industry Technology Development Institute (ITDI) laid


the groundwork for S&T in the country.  Today, it is one of the DOST's R&D
agencies and undertakes multidisciplinary industrial R&D, technical
services, and knowledge translation or technology
transfer/commercialization.  ITDI harnesses know-how in new technology
and product innovation, and through the years, has emerged as a credible
and reliable industry and government partner in accelerating growth and
development in the country.

Establish, develop, and maintain national units of measure to provide


international traceability

Metals Industry Research and Development Center


(MIRDC) provides both the government and the private sector in the
metals and engineering industry with professional management and
technical expertise on training of engineers and technicians, information
exchange, trade accreditation services, quality control and testing of metal
products, research and development, and business economics advisory
services.
Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) is an agency
of the government that is authorized to regulate the safe and peaceful
applications of nuclear science and technology in the Philippines.
Under Executive Order 128, the PNRI is mandated to perform the following
functions:

1. Conduct research and development on the application of radiation


and nuclear techniques, materials and processes.
2. Undertake the transfer of research results to end-users, including
technical extension and training services.
3. Operate and maintain nuclear research reactors and other radiation
facilities.
4. License and regulate activities relative to production, transfer and
utilization of nuclear radioactive substances.

Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) is the premier


textile research and development arm of the Department of Science and
Technology (DOST). It is mandated by Executive Order No. 128 dated
January 30, 1987 to perform the following functions:
- Conduct applied research and development projects to produce
appropriate and cost-effective technologies to support the growth of the
textile and allied industries;
- Transfer the developed technologies to micro, small and medium
enterprises (MSMEs) and other stakeholders; and
- Provide quality technical services for the textile and allied industries to
enable them to be globally-competitive.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration 
PAGASA
Pangasiwaan ng Pilipinas sa Serbisyong Atmosperiko, Heopisiko at
Astronomiko,  
The agency is mandated to provide protection against natural calamities
and to insure the safety, well-being and economic security of all the people,
and for the promotion of national progress by undertaking scientific and
technological services
in meteorology, hydrology, climatology, astronomy and other geophysical
sciences.

Created on December 8, 1972 by reorganizing the Weather Bureau,


PAGASA now serves as one of the Scientific and Technological Services
Institutes of the Department of Science and Technology.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology


(PHIVOLCS)
The DOST-PHIVOLCS is a service institute of the DOST for monitoring and
mitigation of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami.
The institute is principally mandated to mitigate disasters that may arise
from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and other related
geotectonic phenomena.
National Science and Technology Authority (NSTA)
Originally established as the National Science and Development Board
(NSDB) on 13 June 1958, it was reconstituted as the National Science
and Technology Authority (NSTA) on 17 March 1981 with the vision of "A
competent and competitive science and technology community with a
social conscience."

National Academy of Science and Technology NAST


The highest recognition and scientific advisory body of
the Philippines under the Department of Science and Technology. It was
created through Presidential Decree 1003-A issued by President Ferdinand
E. Marcos in 1976 to honor and recognize Filipino scientists who made
worthy contributions in the advancement of science and technology in the
country. It also recommends individuals to be conferred the Order
of National Scientist upon approval of the President of the Philippines.
