Eurofighter Typhoon
Definition: The Typhoon is a European, twin-engine mul-
tirole fighter built by the Eurofighter consortium—a part-
nership of aerospace companies from the United Kingdom,
Germany, Italy and Spain.
Variants and Features: From the start of the program,
the Typhoon's development and procurement have been
grouped into "tranches" (which are further subdivided
into "batches" and "blocks"). Each tranche includes new
capabilities and involves a separate procurement contract
with the consortium nations. Tranche 1 reached initial
operational capability (IOC) in summer 2004 with only
air-to-air capabilities.

bility came with the
Tranche 2 aircraft,
deliveries of which
began in October
2008 and continued
through 2013.
Five core features of the Typhoon's design are super-
cruise, high-maneuverability, reduced radar cross section
(RCS), an advanced countermeasures system and advanced
sensors. The aircraft's two Eurojet EJ200 engines have
enough thrust to achieve speeds above Mach 1 without the
use of fuel-intensive afterburners. The aircraft's inher-
ently unstable shape and strong structure allow it to ex-
ecute rapid turns and sustain prolonged g-forces.
The latest upgrade of the Eurofighter, Tranche 3A, is cur-
rently undergoing flight testing. The Tranche 3 Eurofight-
er is scheduled to enter service with the U.K. toward the
end of 2014.
Upgrades: Software upgrades known as Phase Enhance-
ments are underway for Tranche 2 aircraft and are already
planned for Tranche 3. Phase 1 Enhancements (P1E) are be-
ing implemented in two parts—P1EA and P1EB—both of
which expand the aircraft's ground attack capabilities;
P1EB, for example, will allow full usage of the Paveway IV
weapon. P1EA is already in service with Saudi and U.K. air-
craft. P1EB is beginning to enter service with U.K. aircraft.
Phase 2 Enhancements (P2E) will improve human-ma-
chine interfaces (such as better helmet integration) and
the aircraft's ability to conduct simultaneous air-to-air
and air-to-ground operations, as well as introduce new
weapons.
Discussion also is ongoing regarding installation of an AESA
radar, the Euroradar Captor- E, on Tranche 2 and 3 aircraft.

Finally, plans are firming up to integrate advanced
weapons on the aircraft. Meteor missile integration is
scheduled for 2017. The U.K. is looking to incorporate
Storm Shadow and Brimstone by 2018. In June 2014, the
U.K. Defense Ministry granted BAE Systems a contract to
begin studying integration of the Brimstone 2. The Selec-
tive Precision Effects at Range (SPEAR) 3 missile is also be-
ing considered.
Production, Delivery and Exports: Ownership shares
in the consortium are divided among its four members:
United Kingdom 33%; Germany 33%; Italy 21%; and Spain
13%. Likewise, production of the aircraft is also divided
among the participating companies: Airbus Defense and
Space (Germany and Spain) 43%; BAE Systems (U.K.) 37.5%;
and Alenia Aermacchi (Italy) 19.5%.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed by the
consortium nation's defense ministers in 1997, the U.K.,
Germany, Italy and Spain committed to purchasing 620
Typhoons: 232 for the U.K.; 189 for Germany; 121 for Italy;
and 87 for Spain. The consortium nations have 109 aircraft
left to purchase under their original commitment. How-
ever, because all four nations have encountered significant
financial constraints, it has become questionable whether
those orders will materialize.
Beyond the consortium, Austria ordered 18 jets in 2003
as part of Tranche 1 production but reduced the order to
15 in 2007; deliveries began that year and finished in De-
cember 2009. Saudi Arabia ordered 72 Tranche 2 aircraft
in 2007 to replace the country's fleet of Panavia Tornados.
Deliveries began in 2009 and had reached 38 by July 2014,
with another 12 expected by the end of the year.
In December 2012, Oman placed an order for 12 aircraft.
First deliveries and service entry are anticipated in 2017.
Status: As of July 2014, 412 Typhoons had been delivered
out of the total 610 on order. The last Tranche 2 aircraft is
expected to be delivered in summer 2014, after which all
aircraft will be delivered in Tranche 3 configuration. Pro-
duction is expected to continue through at least 2018.
Outside of its current operators, the Typhoon is competing
for contracts with multiple prospective buyers, including
Belgium, Denmark, Bahrain, Qatar, Malaysia and Indonesia.
