1. INTRODUCTION

Hospitals, clinic and community health agencies can be very different from other work
environments. Healthcare systems are complex and there are many things you need to
know about types of hospital systems, patient care, insurance, healthcare providers and
legal issues. This tutorial will help you learn basic healthcare concepts so you can be
successful on the job and understand the system.

You need to know about the healthcare system so you can be effective on the job.
The image below shows the different groups you will be working with. As you work with
the healthcare team, you will need to know about hospital systems, types of care, and the
roles of each member of the healthcare team. As you work with patients, you will need to
understand different types of insurance, how to help uninsured patients and how to protect
patient rights and privacy. You also need to know what community resources are
available and how to access those services for patients.

Technology/Programming-Languages/Database Involved

HTML: HTML elements are the building blocks of HTML pages. With HTML
constructs , images and other objects such as interactive forms may be embedded into
the rendered page.HTML provides means to create structured documents by denoting
structural semantics for text such as headings , paragraphs , lists, links ,quotes and other
items.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheet): Cascading style sheets are used to format the layout of
Web pages. They can be used to define text styles, table sizes and other aspects of web
pages that previously could only be defined on a pages HTML.

JAVASCRIPT: An object-oriented computer programming language commonly used to

create interactive effects within web browsers.

1
PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor): It is a script language and interpreter that is freely
available and used primarily on Linux Web servers. It originally derived from Personal
Home Page.

MYSQL: It is an open- source relational database management system(RDBMS).Its

name s a combination of “My” ,the name of co-founder Michael Wideninus’s daughter ,
and “SQL” the abbreviation for Structured Query Language.

2. LITERATURE SURVEY

The purpose of the present survey is to investigate the effect of LIS on its users based on
their personal experience with the system. The relevance of this study exists in the fact
that there are insufficient researches available till date which assessed either the
individual or organizational impact of the LIS in hospitals and medical centers of Saudi
Arabia. The present study explored the impact of LIS using five dimensions, which
encompasses LIS-related betterment of workflow and services, the user's intention to use
the system and the problems that might be generated by the system itself. Nonetheless,
LIS is the most important supportive technique which helps in the diagnosis and constant
monitoring of the patients' care in hospitals. It integrates with HIS infrastructure and
assists laboratory personnel's in entering, archiving, and communicating laboratory-
related data to other departments. Our results indicate that hospital staff using who are
using LIS had a positive and supportive view for the LIS to be an essential HIS in their
practice. Accordingly, the findings of our study are consistent with other studies in the
literature. The study also discusses the importance of LIS in the study's background. The
study has mentioned the anticipated benefits of the health information system on
performance and clinical practice influence users' attitudes. The most important role of
LIS is bringing together all relevant clinical partners in healthcare organizations to ensure
that users of LIS have access to reliable, authoritative, usable, understandable,
comparative data.

Laboratory information system has been established to augment communication

between patients and healthcare professionals, enables patients to play a more dynamic
role in their own treatment and self-management and leads to an increase in self-
efficiency. We observed a strong positive relationship between the factors that favor the
improvement which LIS has introduced to users' work i.e. External Communication and
Service Outcomes. Additionally, a statistically significant but moderately positive
relationship between the factors that analyze difficulties associated with LIS users i.e.
Personal Hassles and Increased Blame. Our study findings point out to the fact that

3
electronic laboratory information systems have a large potential to augment patient care
and public health monitoring in poor settings that face several challenges such as lack of
trained personnel, limited transportation, and large coverage areas.

Considerable association of different factors like external communication, service

outcomes, personal hassles, and increased blame was observed with users' healthcare
experience, departments inside the laboratory, current job position, and computer
knowledge. Job area within the laboratory has the strongest effect on the four of the study
variables (External Communication, Service Outcomes, Personal Hassles, and Increased
Blame) than any other LIS-user features. This is attributed to the differences in the
working system and the workload of the laboratory of each department. Age, gender,
education level, receipt of formal training on LIS, and LIS-experience was unrelated to
any of the study variables. Although the results of the current study indicate
comprehensively a favorable attitude towards LIS usage, there are few aspects which
demonstrate some basic issues that might have an effect on the user/system interaction in
the future. One such important aspect is the absence of any formal training for some of
the LIS users. Despite the fact that the current study has not observed an association
between the receipt of training and ease of LIS use, numerous study has specified
receiving training on any new HIS software as a determiner in the success or failure of
HIS. Furthermore, a significant number of users have reported that they use workarounds
on LIS to run tests or enter procedures. It can lead to mistakes and errors while
performing analysis, thus causing uncertainty in the results. Together, it indicates that the
LIS system does not consider and include every aspect of the users' preconditions which
obligates them to find different ways to finish their daily routine. Similarly, around half of
the respondents were occasionally blamed for errors related to the system or work
processes. Criticizing users for system-related mistakes creates an undesirable mindset for
the system usage and for other clinical departments too. We believe that accusing users
without identifying the underlying causes for it within the system or process is only
concealing the problem. Therefore, the present study suggests a detailed investigation of
the whole working environment to properly establish the origin and type of such mistakes
rather than just blaming users.

4
Finally, more or less than half of the users opined that the information system
department controls the laboratory. It causes users to feel that their power is lost on an
important part of their work. The primary reason behind this issue is that the information
system department monitors the operation of LIS inside the laboratory which gives the
laboratory staff an impression that they are just end-users with no command on the
system. A feeling of losing power or job freedom can complicate their daily job routine.

4. SOFTWARE DESIGN DOCUMENTS

Introduction
The laboratory information system (LIS) is a data processing and dissemination technique
used in the laboratory to deliver accurate and understandable results within a reasonable
timescale as requested by clinicians. The system entails a sequence of events which
include, delivery of samples to the laboratory, sample accessioning, analyzing, verifying
and approving results or reanalyzing samples and releasing results to the clinicians who
requested the tests. In short, the concept of LIS refers to the computerization of the
laboratory system or automation of clerical labor-intensive activities associated with the
processing of laboratory results to improve accuracy and turnaround time of results.
Automation of laboratory activities removes the element of manual reporting, increases
productivity and allows access to retrospective data for analysis. Previous studies have
reported an improvement in the accuracy of data and turnaround time of laboratory results
after installation of the LIS.

The increase in clinical specimens, as well as the consolidation and integration of

laboratories and tests, have resulted in the generation of significant volumes of tests and
data. The complex and large quantity of data that these laboratories accumulate as well as
the continued demand for data to support public health surveillance for effective disease
prevention has resulted in the need for operational LIS or Laboratory Information
Management System (LIMS). Although these terms are often used interchangeably, LIS
typically refers to strictly clinical operations and LIMS refers to all others including
Public Health, Pharmaceutical, Research and Development, Manufacturing, Food &
Beverage, Forensics, Chemicals, and other fields as well. For the purpose of this paper,
we will use the term LIS. This system can effectively integrate and handle all
sophisticated processes and procedures related to data from different laboratory
departments. These include microbiology, parasitology, virology, histopathology,
biochemistry, hematology, endocrinology, cytology, toxicology, serology, and
immunology. Data for all such activities for laboratory services aggregates at the data

8
warehouse repositories. This data is available to enhance business (i.e. billing of
laboratory test), research and training aspects of the organization.

<p>Health and hygiene stand
together as if you keep yourself clean, you will be safe from a lot of diseases. Basic
cleanliness must be followed by everyone and must be developed through practice.
Taking baths and brushing your teeth is an example of everyday hygiene. By taking a
bath, you keep dirt and bacteria away from your body which could cause illness. Brushing
your teeth keeps your teeth healthy and strong. Similarly, there are many such practices
that must be followed for staying clean and healthy. Taking care of your body is
necessary since if you ignore it, your body will be riddled with diseases and not be strong
enough. Thus, following basic cleanliness routines is a must if you want to stay healthy

7. COCLUSION & FUTURE WORK

The LIS was not primarily designed as a research or surveillance tool. Its function has
been to generate data accessible to the requesting client that could be used for appropriate
and accurate billing of all tests done in the laboratory. Data has also been used to
understand the volume of tests done, the time it takes to get results back to the patient and
to plan efficient service delivery of the NHLS. We believe that such a system can be used
as an effective surveillance tool to monitor the development of antimicrobial resistance to
various significant bacterial pathogens in our population since the process of acquiring
culture and sensitivity data is inherently ongoing. Therefore, understanding the challenges
of the system and suggesting ways of improving the overall system performance would be
a step in the right direction for a well-established and functioning antimicrobial resistance
surveillance program. Such a program would enhance our ability to contain the growing
crisis of antimicrobial resistance that threatens our ability to treat patients effectively in
South Africa.

Future Work:
 Growing lab business is easy when the Lab Information System (LIS) is cloud-
based. Initiating collections and generating reports becomes easy and manageable
when all master data is available in one place. All centers can be managed at one
single and secure platform while they may function independently.
 A Lab Information System must enable you to fully track your inventory and track
samples real time. After all, no one likes to be kept in the dark in the age of
technology.
 Error Free Reporting.
