CRW essay instructions.

Dear CRW Students,

The first draft of your second story is still due on 24.4, but I wanted to give you instructions
for the essay due on 13.5. The purpose of the essay is to analyze a piece of literature by
focusing on how and why an author used certain writing techniques. This is not too different
from any Lit Seminar essay, but I would like you to focus on one of the areas described in
chapters of the Burroway text. These areas are: Structure & Conflict, Description, Character
& Characterization, Atmosphere, Narrative Stance, and Metaphor. The last, metaphor, can
include anything related to meaning, symbolism, or even semiotics if you are feeling
ambitious. Since this is a short fiction class, please examine short stories. You many use any
story or a small group of comparable stories whether we have read it in class or not.
Translations are acceptable. Please provide at least four pages with some outside research.
The paper will be due on 13.5 along with the rest of the work for the class and there will be
no in-class opportunity for review or re-drafting, so please ask questions if you have them.
