1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

Reading Standards for Literature K-5: Kindergarteners: 3. With prompting and support,
identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.

Writing Standards K-5: Kindergarteners: 3. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and

writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the
order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.

2. Objectives:
SWBAT - Students consider the beginning, middle, and end of the story by writing or drawing,
and students will learn the concept of sequence in a plot.

3. Materials/Equipment:
 Book
 Projector
 Computer
 Whiteboard
 Paper
 Markers
 Crayons
 Stapler

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book
B. Extension activity:
After reading the story, I will introduce some pictures of real-life knights and explain what their
job is in a kingdom. Once we establish that knights help keep the royal family and kingdom safe,
we will write down the main events from the story and write them in order. I will then pass out
materials enough for each group table and walk to each group while they are doing their book.
They will draw out the plot from the story from beginning, middle, and end to explain their
version of the story. They can add new scenes if they want too or stick to the version. They can
have fun while learning how a story gets from the beginning to the end.

5. Closure:
To wrap up, the students will show their classmates their remake of the story. I will write down
what each student states and staple it at the end to their tiny book. Once we establish the new
stories, I will tell them that the step by step in the story is important. For example, we will
discuss what would happen if the dragon saw James in the “knight School” before seeing him in
the pond. Each step can make a change in the story. If the dragon saw James in the knight suit,
he would have eaten him.
