CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter states the reason of the researchers for pursuing their topic and the problems

that will be answered during the process of the experiments. The hypotheses, both null

and alternative are also included, together with the rationale of the study. In this chapter,

the scope and the delimitations of the study are read including the related studies and

literature that the researchers used as a handy tool in the completion of the study.

Background of the Study

Statement of the Problem

General Problem

This study aims to alleviate physiological distress induced by various

forms of somatic ailments inhibited by certain individuals by means of staging an

intervention provided by means of a robotic apparatus.

Specific Problems

Specifically, this study attempts to answer the following problems:

1. Will the data provided by the sensor be accurate in determining if

the patient is exhibiting signs that connotes the need for immediate

medical attention?
2. Will H.E.R.M.E.S. be able to respond to the patient upon the

emission of the distress signal?

3. Will H.E.R.M.E.S. be able to transmit an alert in relation to the

distress signal to an immediate contact personnel of the patient?

4. Will H.E.R.M.E.S.’s attempt to alleviate distress be effective in

relieving the patient?

Hypotheses

The researchers came up with possible hypotheses to the problems that might be

encountered in the study, HERMES: Health Emergency Response Module Emulating

Succor. Below are the researcher’s hypotheses in null and alternative form.

Null

1. The data provided by the sensor is inaccurate in determining if the

patient is exhibiting signs that connotes the need for immediate

medical attention.

2. H.E.R.M.E.S. was unable to respond to the patient upon the emission

of the distress signal.

3. H.E.R.M.E.S. was unable to transmit an alert in relation to the distress

signal to an immediate contact personnel of the patient.

4. H.E.R.M.E.S.’s attempt to alleviate distress was ineffective in

relieving the patient.

Alternative

1. The data provided by the sensor is accurate in determining if the

patient is exhibiting signs that connotes the need for immediate

medical attention.

2. H.E.R.M.E.S. was able to respond to the patient upon the emission of

the distress signal.

3. H.E.R.M.E.S. was able to transmit an alert in relation to the distress

signal to an immediate contact personnel of the patient.

4. H.E.R.M.E.S.’s attempt to alleviate distress was effective in relieving

the patient.
