Questions in Section A carry 2 marks each, questions in Section B carry


4 marks each and questions in Section C carry between 6 to 10 marks
each.

Section A:
Each of the questions 1 to 10 carries 2 marks.

1. A group of 167 pupils are seated according to their index numbers in the hall as follows.
Which row is the last pupil seated in?

The pupils are essentially arranged in rows of 10. With row 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 corresponding
to row 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 respectively. 167 ÷ 10 = 16 R 7. Row 7 is row 4 in reality. Last pupil
is seated in row 4.

2. Cass made 147 paper stars. She made 82 more stars than Sue. How many stars did
they make altogether?
Cass → 147
Sue → 147 – 82 = 65 Together → 147 + 65 = 212 stars

3. The key code to a lock is a 3-digit number. All the digits are greater than 3. The digit in
the Tens place is 1 less than the digit in the Ones place and 4 more than the digit in the
Hundreds place. What is the 3-digit number?

4. C is a multiple of D. B is a proper fraction of A.

6. At the end of a camp, all the campers were arranged into 3 equal rows to take a
photograph. Lynnette was in the second row. She was the 6th from left and 7th from right.
How many campers were there altogether?
6 + 7 – 1 = 12 people per row
12  3 = 36 campers

7. 1000 dots are evenly spaced to form a circle.


They are numbered from 1 to 1000 with dot 1000 directly opposite dot 500.
Which dot is opposite dot 857?
857 – 500 = 357

8. Tom is spending the weekend at the beach. He visits the shop there. The shop lists the
value of the items they sell by points. Tom has a voucher for 42 points.

Which items should Tom buy to make the most of the voucher if the remainder points are
not refundable for cash?

Total = 55
55 – 42 = 13
13 = 5 + 8
Tom should buy the slippers, shorts, cap and sunglasses.

Each of the questions 11 to 20 carries 4 marks.

11. I think of a number between 10 to 30. It is an odd number. The sum of the digits lies
between 4 and 8. The product of their digits also lies between 4 and 8. The product is
larger than the sum. What is the number?

12. Two boys have the same amount of money. Together, they have the same amount of
money as five girls. If each girl has $4, how much more money does each boy have
than each girl?
$4  5 = $20
$20 ÷ 2 = $10
$10 – $4 = $6

13. In a contest to guess the number of balloons in a bunch, Munah guessed 25, Nick
guessed 31, Peter guessed 29, Brenda guessed 23 and Irene guessed 27.
Two guesses missed the correct answer by 2, and two guesses missed by 4.
The other guess was correct. How many balloons were there in the bunch?

14. Suresh arranges 6 coloured cubes – Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Black, in a
straight line.
The Orange cube is not next to the Yellow cube.
The Blue cube is next to the Black cube and the Green cube.
The Yellow cube is neither in the 1st nor 4th position.
The Red cube is in the 6th position.
The Black cube is next to the Yellow cube and the Blue cube.
Which position is the Green cube in?

Find the cost of 1 pair of skates and 2 skateboards.
$558 ÷ 2 = $279 (3 marks)

b. If Gopal buys an electric scooter, he will be short of $150.


If he buys a pair of skates and a skateboard, he will have $142 left.
If the electric scooter cost $475, how much does a pair of skates cost?
$475 - $150 = $325
$325 - $142 = $183
$279 - $183 = $96 (skateboard)
$279 – $(296) = $87 (pair of skates) (6 marks)
