Brindley Richard minister of Percy Chapel Congregational 1861 Richard Baldwin Brindley
The Percy Chapel was created when the congregation at Argyle Chapel
split over the appointment of W H Dyer as successor to William Jay. See
Recollections of William Jay, of Bath with Occasional Glances at Some
of his Contemporaries and Friends by his son Cyrus Jay, published by
Hamilton, Adams & Co, London, 1859 pp 258 and 292. The building
opened in 1854. From the Bath Directory 1862-3: Brindley, Rev. Rd.
Baldwin (minister of Percy Chapel), Rock-hall Villa, Oldfield road. Since
1955 the church has served as the Elim Pentecostal church.
In the 1871 census his wife is described as a widow. A son of the same
name, also a Congregational minister, appears in a passenger list
travelling from New York to Liverpool in 1899. Presumably he had

attended the 2 International Congregational Council in Boston 22-29

The death of Charles W Cliffe, aged 91, was registered 1951/Q3
Stockport.

From Crockford’s Clerical Directory of 1918, William Samuel Coad was
curate of Bath Abbey from 1913, had previously been an assistant
master and curate at St Nicholas, Leicester.

Dublin, ... was ordained a clergyman of the Church of England, but soon
withdrew for conscientious reasons. He had a curacy at Westfort, Co.
Mayo, and is mentioned in the life of the Archbishop of Tuam as having
resigned and joined the Brethren. ... Mr. Code never joined with J[ohn]
N[elson] D[arby] in his Exclusive views, though he was much attached to
him personally. He was with the Brethren at Cork, and ministered there.
Later he left Ireland and settled in Bath with his family, and remained
there till his death...”

Brethren One of the founders of the Plymouth Brethren. Educated at Westminster
School and Trinity College Dublin, he became an Anglican vicar working
in Ireland until his resignation when Archbishop William Magee of Dublin
insisted that those he converted swear allegiance to the sovereign. (The
refers to the Test Act of 1673, more fully, An Act for Preventing Dangers
which may happen from Popish Recusants.) Travelled in Europe in the
1830s and 1840s giving lectures and establishing churches and later in
the 1860s and 1870s to North America, New Zealand and Australia.
Provided a new translation of the Old Testament.

Brethren Born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in1848. Educated at Oriel College, Oxford
(BA 1874, MA 1875), and the University of Heidelberg, and after being a
private tutor at Oxford, was modern language master at Sir Joseph
Williamson's School, Rochester (1889-99), lecturer in the School of
Commerce at University College, Liverpool (1899-1901), and modern
language master at Rutlish School, Merton, Surrey (1901-04) and King
Edward VII’s School, King's Lynn, Norfolk (1904-05). In 1905 he retired
from active life. Besides editing J. N. Darby's English version of the Old
Testament (4 parts, London, 1883-89) and W. Kelly's expositions of Mark
and John (2 vols., 1907-08), he wrote Outlines of Old Testament Study,
Historical and Critical (1883), Institutes and History of Roman Private
Law with Catena of Texts by Carl Salkowski, Edward Elihu Whitfield
(1886); A School Introduction to the Commercial Sciences by Edward
Elihu Whitfield, London, Percival & Co, 1892

A non-parochial Anglican Proprietary chapel which opened in 1795 and
was closed in 1929. Kensington Chapel, London Road Bath,
Archaeological and Environmental Assessment Jan 2006 B&NES states
“No archival material pertaining to Kensington Chapel is held by Bath
City Records office, The archives (CERC, ICBS) of the Church of
England, The British Library or the RIBA.” However the chapel was also
used by the Baptists and Octavius Winslow was a leading Baptist
preacher. From the Bath Directory 1862-3: Winslow Rev. Octavius, D.D.,
(minister of Kensington Chapel) 27 Green Park bdgs. He and his wife
are buried in Bath Abbey Cemetery (Section 3 southern border).
