    Hydropower is a major source of renewable electricity worldwide. In 2017, hydropower accounted for 16.4% of global electricity generation and had an installed capacity of 1,267 GW globally. China had the largest hydropower capacity at 341 GW, followed by the United States at 103 GW and Brazil at 100 GW. Hydropower provides clean, reliable electricity and has significantly lower lifecycle carbon emissions than fossil fuel sources like coal. It also helps avoid air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions that would otherwise result from burning fossil fuels.
