for Design of Shafts

Design the shaft shown in Figure, in which pulley C (500 mm dia.)


receives a power of 20 KW at 800 rpm horizontally from the left. Gear A
(600 mm dia.) delivers 65% of the power downward to the right at an
angle of 20° with vertical axis. Gear E (400 mm dia.) delivers the
remaining power upward the right at an angle of 30° with vertical axis.
The allowable shear stress of shaft is 45 N/mm2. Take the normal and
shear fatigue factors are Kn = 1.3 & Ks = 1.5 respectively.
Hint: The gears G and H push back on gears A and E respectively and
all these gears have 14.5° involute teeth profiles.
