N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Leah Skromme Date of Activity: 4/3 and 4/4 Faculty name: Rajni Parmar

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be

specific about the purpose and your role):

The professional activity I attended was the Annual Interprofessional Rural Health Professions

Program Conference via Zoom. The purpose of this conference was to share information about

COVID-19, the challenges of living in a rural community, and allowing AHEC Scholars to

present their research. They also had presentations on telehealth, food insecurity, and cultural

humility when working with indigenous populations. My role in this professional activity was to

respectfully listen to each presentation and ask questions when needed.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

This event was held via Zoom on April 3 and April 4th. I attended 3 hours of the conference on

April 3rd and 5 hours of the conference on April 4th.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This experience was very valuable to me. I was pleasantly surprised at the diversity of each

presentation, and how the topics were very relevant to the current situation of the world. There

was a presentation on how to help the public deal with anxiety related to COVID-19, where they

talked about motivational interviewing which I have learned about before but I enjoyed getting

more information on this topic. There was information about self-care during the COVID-19

pandemic, including information on diet (how foods with flavonoids like onions, chamomile,

turmeric, and apples can reduce inflammation), exercise (how exercise can increase vitality,

mood, and cognitive function), and information about sleep hygiene (reducing light exposure
from screens and limiting caffeine). I also learned a lot about cultural humility and how this term

means that a person is able to acknowledge meaningful cultural beliefs, practices, and views in

other individuals or populations.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

All of the information I learned during this conference will help me through my nursing career.

The information about self-care and dealing with anxiety can help decrease personal burnout,

and I can use this information to help my patients as well. The information about cultural

humility can help promote healthy collaboration with other communities and cultures. I also will

be able to use the information I learned about Navajo education that is needed in response to

COVID-19 which I can use in future public health endeavors.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or

why not? (Describe)

I would recommend this professional experience to students in the future, as it was a very diverse

conference that covered different disciplines and topics. I think rural health and cultural

minorities are really important populations to understand and advocate for, and this conference

helped me grow in my knowledge of these populations. I also would recommend this conference

because on April 4th there were a lot of presentations from groups of students (DNP, Pharmacy)

and I enjoyed seeing these students present their research similar to the research we are

conducting in N473.

Brochure or proof of attendance obtained if applicable? Yes, I have a screenshot if needed.
