TYPE OF TASK: Writing an informal e-mail


AUDIENCE: A pen pal
PURPOSE: Describing places around the neighborhood and city.
PROMPT: You belong to an online community of people who are learning English. The topic of the month is
“describing different places around my neighborhood and city”. You are writing an e-mail to your pen pal (from
another country), describing two places in the city of Medellín. In your e-mail, include the following aspects:
1. Mention the names of the places and a short description of the places (what it looks like). One place in
your neighborhood and another around the city.
2. Mention the activities you can or cannot do there.
3. Give directions and explain how to get there.
4. Write 80 to 90 words and follow the format below.

Content: complete the task assigned by describing places of


the city and neighborhood by addressing the right audience,
and send messages so the reader is left with no questions.
Composing (organization): produce a cohesive text
(relationship among the parts of the text) and show evidence
of a coherent text (an appropriate organization within the
sentences that are according to the level).
Vocabulary: use vocabulary related to the city, places,
adjectives, activities and directions; and use a variety of
word choice to make writing interesting.
Structure: produce the simple present structure when
talking about descriptions and activities to do in a place
(using different verbs); and use other sentence structures.
Mechanics: make proper use of capitalization, punctuation
and spelling so it doesn´t interfere with the meaning or
communication purpose of the task.
