Ancient History 134

Portfolio Reflection

Ancient history helps me as a student to have a good understanding of the world and how

people transformed over the decades. Learning ancient history is also vital in understanding the

essence of changes to people and communities by comparing different eras. Thus, it is possible to

appreciate the vastness and richness of either a state, a society, or the world. One primary focus

of ancient history is on ancient civilization. The focus of this paper will be to explore how the

relationship of ancient civilization to social sciences and humanities helps me to understand

economic and political commonalities and differences in consideration to different cultures,

people, and also the environment.

When it comes to an ancient civilization in ancient India, political leadership was unique.

For example, the Indus Valley Ciliation considered priest Kings as head of government. The

Maurey Empire, through its political leadership and through Bureaucracy, was able to

successfully and effectively stabilize and centralize the government, which plays a significant

role in boosting and ensuring that culture and trade flourished (Shiv Kapur). The Maurya Empire

was a vital leadership figure in ensuring effectiveness and in promoting general outcomes and

performance of this region. As a result, political leadership and Bureaucracy are some of the

most important factors to consider when it comes to ensuring success, development, and increase

the performance of people and communities.

In Arab’s ancient history, politics and Bureaucracy by Abu Bakr were delivered from the

Sunnah and Qur’an, where political leaders were either elected or selected successors to Caliphs

who were prophets. As an ancient history student, I learn that political leaders must understand

and depend on laws made and consult subjects when it comes to making important decisions in a

community. For the ancient Arabs, they rely mainly on sharia laws, duty to consult its theme, and

the essence of rebuking any unjust ruler (Beltzner).

Julius Caesar was a very a great political leader in the Roman history. He is well known

for his exceptional ability for strategy in war and his great leadership lessons, vision, and

wisdom that I could learn from. In Roman times, the deserters were punished, including those

that were family or friends, and this was an arduous task. Caesar, a political leader, was

responsible for this hard task; this was one of the most challenging tasks a soldier or any leader

could face. From this rather extreme example, I learn that a good leader must not just wait for

other people to execute the hard tasks (Schneider). I learn that as a leader, I should deal with a

problem on my own and that I should be an excellent example to others and take on the arduous

responsibilities in society. Julius Caesar, like many other political leaders in Roman times, was

an outstanding orator. He was also dressed impeccably at the senate meetings and addressed his

citizens and soldiers with passionate speeches. I learn that a good leader should be concerned

about learning excellent communication skills that will enable me to convey messages correctly

and engage those that I am working with. The excellent communication skills will help me

contribute positively to better my society.

Politically, leaders play an essential role in ensuring effectiveness when it comes to the

development and success of their communities. Application of functional political leadership

styles and decisions is necessary when it comes to influencing our societies and making sure that

the outcomes are positive. Ancient history, in this case, affects my understanding of the world

and how political leaders influence development, success, and management of any community.
