Beginning: In 1981, in San Francisco, Chris

Plot Gardner (Will Smith) invests his lifetime
savings on portable bone density scanners that
he tries to demonstrate and sell to doctors. The
investment turns out to be a failure, which
leaves the family bankrupt and, as a result, his
wife Linda (Thandie Newton) leaves him and
moves to New York. His son Christopher
(Jaden Smith) stays with his father.

Knot: Chris tries to sell one of the scanners in

the center and meets Jay Twistle. In an
encounter with Jay, Chris rides in a taxi with
him. On the way Chris builds a Rubik's Cube.
This meeting opens the possibility of opting
for a position as a stockbroker, a job for which
he and 19 other competitors fight.

Meanwhile, Chris develops a whole series of

ways to make phone sales more efficiently and
also gets potential and valuable customers,
challenging the protocol.
Despite his problems, Chris never reveals his
state of helplessness to his son or his
coworkers, going to the point of giving one of
his bosses five dollars for a taxi, a sum he can't
face.

Ending: At the end of the internship, Chris

meets with his managers. His work has paid off
