EVALUATIVE COMMENTARY ASSIGNMENT (30%)

Pair Work, In-class Assignment

Select ONE argumentative article of 500-600 words that presents the view of the
author on a SINGLE ISSUE and persuasive in nature. The issue must not be on
politics, religions, races or other controversial issues. The argumentative article to be
analysed can be obtained from newspapers, magazine or internet.

Read the article carefully. It must be an article that presents arguments which you
need to evaluate and give comments on the highlighted issue that the writer puts
forward. Summarize the arguments and conclusion of the article. You may have to
paraphrase the ideas so they form complete sentences and cite your references
using APA style.

Next, prepare an outline for an evaluative commentary and write the evaluative
commentary based on the argumentative article of about 350-400 words. You may
use the template given for the outline.

Evaluate the article by answering the following questions:

1. What is the author’s argument/point of view?

2. What are the key points stated in the article? (Summarize the author’s main
points and supporting details)
3. Is the article clear and well supported? (provide strong evidence eg. statistics,
facts, expert testimony etc.)
4. Does the author provide any counter-arguments?
5. Do you agree with the author’s point of view/argument? Why?
6. What is your stand on this issue? Provide reasons to support your stand.

Submit your assignment that includes:

1. Cover page
2. Argumentative article
3. Evaluative commentary
