Pedagogy

Activity First, the teacher would present students with a picture of each
of the following people.

Maggie L. Walker, Harry F. Byrd, Sr., Oliver W. Hill, Sr., Arthur R.

Ashe, Jr, A. Linwood Holton, Jr., and L. Douglas Wilder.

A class discussion introducing each of the people would follow,

under the guidance of the teacher.
The teacher would cover the following information briefly:

Maggie L. Walker – The first African American woman to

establish a bank and become a bank president.

Harry F. Byrd, Sr. – Virginia governor known for road

improvements and modernizing state government.

Oliver W. Hill, Sr. – Was a key player in ‘Brown vs. Board of

Education’

Arthur R. Ashe, Jr. – tennis player and advocate for social

change.

A. Linwood Holton, Jr. – promoted racial equality and had a part

in appointing more women and African Americans in state
government.

L. Douglas Wilder – first African American to be elected state

governor in U.S.

After the discussion, students would be required to produce a

video using Blabberize to introduce one of the historical figures
discussed.
The following steps in order to produce the video, would be
followed.

1. Students would either be assigned a person or would

choose which one they wanted to learn about.
2. Students research their historical figure, and find out the
following:
The person’s full name:
When and Where they were born:
What they did to impact Virginia politically, socially or
economically:
One other interesting fact about them:

They could use a variety of tools to find out this information,

including, links provided by the teacher, a textbook, online
search engine, or notes taken during the previous discussion.

3. Students would write a script and find a picture of the

person online.
4. Then, they would use their picture and script to create a
introduction video about their historical figure, again
talking in first person, to introduce themselves as the
figure.

After the videos are produced, students will watch the videos
together.
