Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
I. Introduction
Both the NovaTech Distributed Discrete I/O (DDIO) and Digital Combination I/O (DCIO) Sequence of
Events Recording (SER) Modules are rugged signal conditioners. The modules are designed to present
the state of field “inputs” to an attached Master device, as well as to accept output commands from a
Master device and convert these commands to “outputs” to control field devices. The Orion DDIO/DCIO
Modules communicate with the Master device using DNP3 protocol.
Three mixes of inputs and outputs are available on the Orion DDIO Module:
24 inputs (-111)
16 inputs / 8 outputs (-110)
8 inputs / 16 outputs (-100)
The Orion DCIO Module only has one combination of inputs and outputs available:
8 inputs/8 outputs/8 analog inputs (-102)
Input states presented to the attached Master device can be reported with a time stamp accurate to 1
millisecond.
A number of methods can be used to provide a time reference to the Orion DDIO/DCIO Module, including
direct IRIG-B input, direct 1PPS input, Network Time Protocol (NTP) over Ethernet, IRIG-B over optional
communication cards, or time sent down using DNP3 (see also Setting Time on the Orion DDIO/DCIO
Module).
X
The Orion DDIO/DCIO Module comes with a standard Ethernet port which supports HTTP, HTTPS, NTP,
Telnet, SSH, and DNP3 Slave protocols. One optional RS-232, RS-485, RS-422, or serial fiber
communication card which supports the DNP3 Slave protocol can also be installed.
A wide range of power supply options enables the Orion DDIO/DCIO Module to be powered from DC
battery systems of 24V dc to 125V dc nominal, as well as 120V ac (see Power Connections).

Wiring for Independent and Isolated Analog Inputs
In the DCIO, a shield point is provided between every pair of analog points in order to simplify wiring. All
shield points are tied to chassis ground. Thus, they are not specifically designated for one set of points.
For example, point 40 is the shield ground point for AI1 and AI2, and is tied internally to the DCIO chassis
ground.
The DDIO/DCIO inputs are polarity sensitive. Internally, the inputs are electrically
isolated from each other.
When using shielded wire, connect the shield to earth ground ONLY on one end of
the cable. Connecting the shield to earth ground at both ends will cause a ground
loop that can cause incorrect readings and equipment malfunction.
22
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
X. Output Wiring
The outputs are soldered as Normally Open (NO). The numbering shown in the following figure is based
on the DDIO -110 Model. Depending on the specific DDIO/DCIO Model, this numbering may be different.
23
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
XI. Ethernet Port
The Orion DDIO/DCIO Module provides an Ethernet port for
Advanced configuration, diagnostics and maintenance
DNP3 over TCP/IP, including event retrieval
Setting module time with Network Time Protocol or DNP3 (see Setting Time on the Orion
DDIO/DCIO Module for an overview of setting time in the Orion DDIO/DCIO)
The port is Base 10/100T on an RJ45 connector (see Figure 5). The IP address can be set by a web
browser, the serial diagnostic port, or by the DIP switches (in Simple Mode).
Protocol Purpose
DNP3 Slave Report input status to a master, and operate control
commands as received from the master.
NTP Client Receive time through Network Time Protocol.
Telnet and SSH On-line maintenance operation.
HTTP and HTTPS Browser-based configuration.
24
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
XII. Serial Diagnostic Port
The Orion DDIO/DCIO Module provides a serial port for diagnostics. This port is a DB9 female port with
DTE pinout. It is labeled Port 1.
The following figure shows the pinout for a DB9 Female port. The pinout for all DDIO/DCIO DB9 ports
with RS-232 is identical.
25
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
NovaTech Configuration Director (NCD), or any other terminal communications program, can be used to
connect to Port 1. This connection from the PC to the DDIO/DCIO requires a user login and password.
The default login is root, and the default password is novatech (see Table 4). Additional
logins/passwords can be added in the User Menu (see Figure 50) of the DDIO/DCIO webpage.
26
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
File Menu
The File Menu allows the Orion DDIO/DCIO’s configuration file ntser.ncd to be transferred to and
from the Orion DDIO/DCIO when using a terminal program that supports Z-modem transfers, such as
NCD. This feature is useful when multiple Orion DDIO/DCIO Modules are to be configured. In this case,
the configuration file can be modified with a text editor or script on a PC, and then downloaded to multiple
Orion DDIO/DCIO units one by one.
Note: If using a serial port for file transfers, it is advisable to change the transfer packet size to
avoid limiting network traffic.
The file transfer packet size can be changed in NCD. In the main NCD menu, click Communications
and select Online Connections (20).
27
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Highlight the desired connection (DDIO) and click Edit Connection .
28
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Select the 128 Bytes option under the File Transfer Packet Size menu. Then click OK .
The packet size will be reduced and the file transfer will require fewer network resources to complete the
transfer. If a larger packet size is desired, select the 1024 Bytes option under the File Transfer
Packet Size menu.
29
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Data Menu
The Data Menu allows monitoring of all input and output points on the Orion DDIO/DCIO. In addition, the
input and output points can also be forced to specific values from this menu without corresponding field
input or master output commands. This feature is useful for commissioning and troubleshooting. Since
each point can be mapped to two ports (Ethernet port and serial port), for example normally open for one
port and normally closed for the other port as dictated by the application, each point can be viewed “as
seen” by the respective port (Ethernet or serial). In addition, internal diagnostic information points are
displayed as well (Figure 24). Any of the points displayed can be polled by a DNP3 Master using the
corresponding point number.
30
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
By selecting the View Input Values or View Output, the following screens are displayed. Data is displayed
by port, which must be entered before the data screens are displayed.
31
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
The screens can be customized as follows depending on what data points are to be examined.
The Column Editor specifies what columns to display (e.g. Point Name, Point Type, Point’s DNP
Address, Change Counter, etc.). The maximum number of displayable columns is four.
The Sort Editor specifies the order in which the points are displayed (e.g. by alphabetical, by point
address, by point value, etc.). In addition, the points’ values can be displayed in Decimal, Hexadecimal, or
Octal.
32
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
View Communications
This option allows the live monitoring of both serial and Ethernet communication with the respective
DNP3 Masters. This is useful to verify both connectivity and actual commands and data values being
exchanged between the master(s) and the Orion DDIO/DCIO. If, while viewing live communications
(Figure 26), the letter “c” (lowercase) is pressed, additional information can be selected to be displayed,
such as time of the poll/response.
Device Statistics
This option is not supported in the Orion DDIO/DCIO.
33
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
System Menu
This option allows the manual setting of the Orion DDIO/DCIO clock as well as various system
information to be retrieved if it is required by NovaTech technical support. This menu also allows remote
soft reset of the Orion DDIO/DCIO.
Disconnect
This option disconnects the current session. If re-connecting to the Orion DDIO/DCIO, the Orion
DDIO/DCIO login and password must be re-entered. The default login is root, and the default password
is novatech. Additional logins/passwords can be added in User Menu (see also Figure 50).
Network Menu
This menu sets the Orion DDIO/DCIO’s IP address. It is an alternate way of setting the IP address, in
addition to setting the IP address by way of a web browser (Figure 45). Setting the IP address by way of a
web browser first requires a network setup that allows connecting to the Orion DDIO/DCIO’s default
address of 192.168.1.1 before changing it to the desired IP address. Depending on the available PC and
network at the time of the Orion DDIO/DCIO configuration, it may be more practical to set up the IP
address by way of the diagnostics port.

XIII. Optional Serial Communication Cards for DDIO/DCIO
The Orion DDIO/DCIO has one communication slot which can be set up with one of the following
communication cards:
RS-232 Serial Card (Standard/Type –A and Isolated/Type –E Version)
Isolated RS-422/RS-485 Card (Type –B)
RS-485 Card with IRIG-B (Type –G)
ST Fiber Card (Type –C)
V-Pin Fiber Card with IRIG-B (Type –J)
The communication slot may remain empty which is available as option –N. In this case, Ethernet is the
only communications link.
The default communication parameters are 9600N81, and the DNP3 address is 1 (i.e. the master must
use address 1 in the command to the Orion DDIO/DCIO for this Orion DDIO/DCIO to respond to it). The
parameters can be changed as needed. If operating in Simple Mode, this is done by setting the DIP
switches. In Advanced Mode, the parameters are set through a web browser.
36
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
The following figure and table show the pinout for a DB9 Female port. It is identical for all Orion
DDIO/DCIO DB9 ports with RS-232.
37
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
JP3 is the only jumper to be set on the RS-232 card. The factory default is IRIG-B Disabled. If changed to
IRIG-B Enabled, the Orion DDIO/DCIO can receive IRIG-B time or 1PPS time through pins 4 and 6 (see
Table 6).
Note: When the JP3 jumpers are changed, they change pins as well as direction (parallel to
circuit board vs. perpendicular to circuit board).
The other jumpers must be left at the factory default settings as shown below.
38
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Isolated RS-422/RS-485 Card1 (Type –B)
The RS-485/422 card provides two-wire and four-wire connectivity using twisted pairs.
The RS-422/485 signals are brought out on a Phoenix screw terminal. The RS-422/485 board can be
jumpered for three different modes.
2-wire (default setting)
4-wire full-duplex
4-wire half-duplex
The following figure shows the pinout for the 5-pin Phoenix connector.

For additional RS-422/485 setup information, see also NovaTech’s RS-422/485 Communication Setup
Technical Note.
39
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
The communication mode is set up by jumpers JP4 and JP5 as shown in the following table.
The following tables describe the pinout of the card connector for each of the communication modes.

40
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Jumpers JP6 and JP3 enable the termination resistor for the Receive line and the Transmit line,
respectively. The default setting is Termination Resistor Disabled/Off. The termination resistor is 120
Ohm.
41
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
RS-485 Card with IRIG-B (Type –G)2
The RS-485 card provides RS-485 2-wire connectivity on a twisted pair. If used with an Orion, it also
enables IRIG-B time synchronization through a second twisted pair. Thus, a single cable between the
Orion and the Orion DDIO/DCIO suffices for both data communication and time synchronization. The
Orion is the IRIG-B Master, and the Orion DDIO/DCIO is the IRIG-B Slave. Depending on the application,
the Orion can distribute its own local time within the installation to synchronize the various components
(multiple Orion and connected IEDs as well as multiple Orion DDIO/DCIO units) of the installation in
relation to each other. Alternatively, if absolute time is needed, the Master Orion in turn must be
connected to a satellite receiver.
Note: With the type –G RS-485 card IRIG-B is transmitted on RS-485 level to allow
synchronization between Orion and Orion DDIO/DCIO without taking up additional
hardware slots. However, since this card uses RS-485 and not TTL transmission levels for
IRIG-B, the IRIG-B signal is not compatible with IRIG-B ports of other manufacturers.
2
For additional RS-485 setup information, see also NovaTech’s Tech Note RS-485/422 Communication
Setup.
42
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Jumpers JP1 and JP4 at the top of the card (Figure 35) enable the termination resistor (120 Ohm) for the
Data line and for the IRIG-B line, respectively. The jumper settings are shown in Table 13.
The RS-485 and IRIG-B signals are brought out on JP2 which is a Phoenix screw terminal with pinout as
shown in the following table.
The following figure shows the pinout for the 6-pin Phoenix connector.
43
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
ST Fiber Card (Type –C)
The ST Fiber card can be set up for multi-drop communications and point-to-point communications. The
default jumper setting is Off (point-to-point communications).
This card supports 800-850nm wavelengths using multimode fiber. The transmit power and receiver
sensitivity depend on the installed fiber as shown in the following table.
Depending on the configuration of the fiber that the Orion DDIO/DCIO is connected to, the Echo jumper
has to be set as follows (Table 16).

V-Pin Fiber Card with IRIG-B (Type –J)
The V-Pin Fiber with IRIG-B card offers fiber communication in multi-drop and point-to-point/star
configurations. The default jumper setting is for point-to-point communications. This card supports 660nm
wavelengths using HCS fiber. For 200m fiber, transmit power is –17.3Bm to –7.2dBm, and receiver
sensitivity is –39dBm to –13.3dBm.
The default communication parameters are 9600N81, and the DNP3 address is 1 (i.e. the master must

parameters can be changed as needed. If operating in Simple Mode, this is done by setting the DIP
switches. In Advanced Mode, the parameters are set through a web browser.
Depending on the configuration of the fiber that the Orion DDIO/DCIO is connected to, the Echo jumper
has to be set as shown in the following table.

XIV. Orion DDIO/DCIO Configuration
The Orion DDIO/DCIO can be configured in one of several ways, depending on the type and number of
parameters that need to be configured. A DIP switch allows selection of Simple Mode versus Advanced
Mode.
In Simple Mode, all operating parameters of the Orion DDIO/DCIO are set by the DIP switches accessible
on the outside of the Orion DDIO/DCIO enclosure.
In Advanced Mode, all operating parameters of the Orion DDIO/DCIO are set using the DDIO/DCIO
webpage. See the DDIO/DCIO Webpage chapter for more information on accessing and navigating the
X
DDIO/DCIO webpage.
Note: For both Simple Mode and Advanced Mode, the firewall rules must be first defined as
described in chapter Firewall. Then the DIP switch S2-5 must be switched to the Up
position and the DDIO/DCIO must be rebooted in order for the new firewall rules to take
effect.
The Orion DDIO/DCIO mode is selected by DIP switch 8 on switch bank S2. In the Down/Off position, the
Orion DDIO/DCIO will operate in Simple Mode. In Up/On position, the Orion DDIO/DCIO will operate in
Advanced Mode. In order to switch between modes, first set the DIP switch to the new position, and then
press the reset button to the left of S1 or power-cycle the Orion DDIO/DCIO. The current mode is
indicated by the Mode LED on the front panel of the Orion DDIO/DCIO (see Figure 9).

firmware reinstallation, the watchdog must be disabled.
Firewall Before the firewall is enabled, it must be set up with firewall
rules as described in chapter Firewall.
Datalink Confirm If Datalink Confirm is set to On, the master must send a
Datalink Confirm to the Orion DDIO/DCIO for every message
received from the Orion DDIO/DCIO. Datalink Confirms are
used by some masters for flow control. However, unless they
are required by the application, it is recommended not to use
them as they take up additional bandwidth.
Multidrop/Modem If DIP switch 4 on bank S2 is set to Direct, the Orion
Direct DDIO/DCIO does not use warmup/warmdown (i.e. Request to
Send) when sending a reply. However, when the Orion
DDIO/DCIO is connected to a modem or a multidrop network, it
may be necessary to use warmup/warmdown. If the DIP switch
is set to Multidrop/Modem, the Orion DDIO/DCIO uses a
warmup time of 25ms and a warmdown time of 5ms. Consult
the modem or network technical documentation for specific
warmup/warmdown requirements.

XV. DDIO/DCIO Webpage
When the Orion DDIO/DCIO is in Advanced Mode, it is configured through a web browser with the
parameters as discussed in Advanced Mode. All entered parameters are saved in a configuration file on
X
the Orion DDIO/DCIO’s flash drive. After the configuration has been completed, the file can be transferred
to a PC for backup purposes by way of the serial diagnostic port. This file – or a modified version thereof
– can also be loaded into other Orion DDIO/DCIO units for quick configuration of multiple Orion
DDIO/DCIOs. The chapter File Menu fully discusses the diagnostic port, and the specific steps required
for this operation.
For initial configuration, open a web browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. If multiple Orion DDIO/DCIO
units are configured on a 192.168.1.x network, make sure they are connected to the network one at a
time. Then change the IP address to an address other than the default address before connecting the
next unit. The configuring PC must also be set to an address on the same network as the Orion
DDIO/DCIO default network, i.e. 192.168.1.n (where n is a number between 2 and 254).
If the PC is being connected straight to the Orion DDIO/DCIO (without a hub or a switch), use a crossover
Ethernet cable for the PC to be able to talk to the Orion DDIO/DCIO.
Alternatively, use the Network Menu of the diagnostic port to set the IP address and then reboot the Orion
DDIO/DCIO.
If connecting to a previously configured Orion DDIO/DCIO and the current IP address is unknown, either
use S1 and S2 to set the DDIO/DCIO to simple mode and an IP address in the range of 192.168.1.n, or
determine the current IP address by connecting to the Network Menu on port 1.

Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
The following pages describe all screens and options of the Orion DDIO/DCIO webpage.
The Orion DDIO/DCIO’s webpage has been tested with Internet Explorer 6.0 and 7.0, and Firefox.
First, the Orion DDIO/DCIO prompts for a User Name and Password (Figure 46). Initially, the user name
is root and password is novatech (case-sensitive). However, additional users can be added later and
the default user credentials be changed.
It is the responsibility of the installer and/or operator to change the default login
credentials as described in this manual in order to maintain security.

The correct time zone can be set under Settings. By default, the Orion DDIO/DCIO operates with UTC
time. The IRIG Time Zone can also be set to Local.
File Transfer allows the Orion DDIO/DCIO’s configuration file to be transferred to and from the Orion
DDIO/DCIO. When transferring from the Orion DDIO/DCIO to a PC ( I/O->PC File Transfer ), the
default file name is ntser.ncd. However, any file name can be designated to save the file on the PC.
When transferring a configuration file from the PC to the Orion DDIO/DCIO ( PC->I/O File Transfer ),
the name of the transferred file must be ntser.ncd, since the Orion DDIO/DCIO uses ntser.ncd –
regardless of its content – as its configuration file (see also the section on the File Menu of the diagnostic
port).
Reset to Factory Defaults forces the entire Orion DDIO/DCIO configuration to revert back to the
default factory settings.

Parameter Description
Baud Baud rate (1,200 to 115,200)
Parity None, odd, even
Stop Bits 1 or 2
Warmup/Warmdown For any type of modem communication or multi-drop communication, a
warmup/warmdown is required by the sending device to enable proper
transmission of the message. Consult the modem or network media
documentation to determine specific warmup/warmdown requirements.
Module Address When the DNP Master uses this address in a DNP message, this Orion
DDIO/DCIO module will respond. Note that on a multi-dropped network, i.e.
one master polling multiple DNP devices, each DNP device must have its
unique Module Address. Otherwise, multiple devices will respond to the same
master command.
Event Buffer Sets the number of events that can be stored in the Orion DDIO/DCIO. If the
DNP Master does not poll the Orion DDIO/DCIO events, the oldest events will
be discarded when this number of events is reached.
Datalink Confirm Specifies whether the Orion DDIO/DCIO will set the Datalink Confirm bit
and expect a Datalink Confirm message from the master for every reply
it sends to the master. Datalink Confirm creates additional overhead and
should not be used unless the master requires Datalink Confirm
messages to provide “flow control”. By default, Datalink Confirm is
disabled.
Default Analog A DNP3 RTU can be set up to return analog input points in different formats
Variation (variations), such as analogs being returned to the DNP3 Master as 32 bit, 16
bit or floating point values. See Appendix B – DNP3 Default Variations for
further information.
Default Counter A DNP3 RTU can be set up to return counter input points in different formats
Variation (variations), such as counters being returned to the DNP3 Master as 32 bit or
16 bit points. See Appendix B – DNP3 Default Variations for further
information.
Time Zone Either UTC or Local time zones may be selected.
Request Time If checked, the Orion DDIO/DCIO will request time synchronization
commands from the master by setting the Time Request flag in the header of
messages that the Orion DDIO/DCIO sends to the master (i.e. replies to
master commands). Do not check this option if IRIG-B or SNTP is being used
to time sync the Orion DDIO/DCIO.
66

Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Note that if any settings on this page are changed, Save Input Settings or Save Output Settings
must be clicked followed by a reboot (or power-cycle) of the Orion DDIO/DCIO in order for the changes to
take effect.
For each of the 8, 16, or 24 input points (Orion DDIO model –100, –110, or –111, or DCIO model -102
respectively), the Contact Filter Time, Debounce Filter Time, and Chatter Count can be set individually.
Parameter Description
Contact Filter The digital input must remain in the new state for at least Contact Filter
Time Time for the new state to be recorded by the Orion DDIO/DCIO and passed
on to the DNP Master. The time recorded will be when the input state was
initially changed. If the input remains in the new state for less than Contact
Filter Time, no change of state and no event will be recorded. The
default setting for Contact Filter Time is 1ms. The Contact Filter
Time can be set to any value up to 65,535ms with one decimal point.
Example: 1.2ms or .4ms
Debounce Filter After the Contact Filter Time expires, all input state changes are
Time disregarded until the Debounce Filter Time has elapsed. Then the
digital input is monitored for changes again. The default setting for Debounce
Filter Time is 10ms. The Debounce Filter Time can be set to any
value up to 65,535ms.
Chatter Count If in any 60 second interval (sliding interval), more input state transitions
occur than are allowed as per Chatter Count, the point is put into the
chatter state, and a DNP3 chatter flag is reported back to the DNP3 Master
polling the Orion DDIO/DCIO. When the input stabilizes, and the chatter falls
below the configured Chatter Count for the current 60 second sliding
window, the point is again reported normally with its current state and events.
The default setting for Chatter Count is 20 state changes. The Chatter
Count can be set to any value up to 255.

Output Properties
Each of the Orion DDIO/DCIO 8 or 16 output points (on models –110 and –100, respectively, or DCIO
model -102) can be assigned a DNP point type of TC (Trip/Close), Pulse, or Latch.
Note: Output override and feedback options are available in future firmware releases.
72
Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
Output Type Description
TC (Trip/Close) A TC (Trip/Close) output consists of two physical outputs (Trip coil and Close
coil) which have a single DNP address. If the DNP Master sends a trip
command to that address, the Trip coil will be pulsed. If the DNP Master
sends a close command to that address, the Close coil will be pulsed. The
default setting is T/C for all outputs.
A Trip/Close point – taking up two physical output points – always starts at an
odd output point address, i.e. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15.
Note that even though two physical outputs (one for trip and one for close)
are assigned to a Trip/Close point, a single DNP address controls both output
points.
DNP Point Address The specific location for a given DNP3 point.
Logging Enabled If this box is checked, any changes for this point will be written to the System
Info log as follows:
Aug 21 16:36:43 syslog: 0 08/21/2007 16:36:43.624969 - output 1 on

Timer and Pulse When this output type is selected, the On Time, Off Time, and Pulses
Override values set below are used instead of values sent via DNP. When not
selected, the specified On Time, Off Time, and Pulses values will only be
used if the value sent via DNP is 0. Only applies to TC and pulse type
outputs.
On Time Number of milliseconds to pulse an output. Only applies to TC and Pulse type
outputs.
Off Time Number of milliseconds between output pulses. Only applies to Pulse type
outputs.
Pulses Number of output pulses to send. Only applies to Pulse type outputs. TC
outputs always send 1 pulse at a time.
Feedback Dropout Stops a TC pulse when the corresponding input goes to the specified state.
Enabled Only applies to TC type outputs. When checked, this option will stop a TC
pulse when the corresponding input feedback has changed to the selected
Status Feedback Sense.

Firewall
This page displays the current firewall status as Firewall Is On or Firewall Is Off.
For each port, a list of IP addresses can be added. This list can then be “allowed access” by clicking
Switch Mode to Allow , or “denied access” by clicking Switch Mode to Deny , depending on
specific security requirements, network layout, and traffic.
After entering the IP address to be “Denied” or “Allowed”, enable the firewall by putting DIP switch S2-5
on the back of the DDIO/DCIO in the Up position. For the new status of the DIP switch to be recognized
by the DDIO/DCIO, reboot the unit.
Only the ports shown in Figure 66 are supported. Traffic on ports not shown in Figure 66 is not supported

XVI. Setting Time on the Orion DDIO/DCIO Module
The time in the Orion DDIO/DCIO Module can be set in one of the following ways. The specific method
chosen depends on individual requirements and system architecture.
IRIG-B
IRIG-B time can be received by the Orion DDIO/DCIO Module in one of the following ways:
A demodulated IRIG-B signal can be hard-wired into the Orion DDIO/DCIO module by way of a
Phoenix-style connector (see Figure 5 for location of connector).
If an RS-232 communication card is installed, and the Orion DDIO/DCIO module is connected to
an Orion using the same card, the IRIG-B time can be received through the card. This is an
optional configuration. If desired, enable IRIG-B using jumpers on the RS-232 Card as shown in
RS-232 Serial Card (Standard/Type –A and Isolated/Type –E Version).
If an RS-485 communication card is installed and the Orion DDIO/DCIO module is connected to
an Orion using the same card, the IRIG-B time can be received through the card. See also RS-
485 Card with IRIG-B (Type –G). This is an optional configuration. If desired, enable IRIG-B using
the jumpers on the RS-485 Card.
If a V-Pin fiber card is installed and the Orion DDIO/DCIO module is connected to an Orion using
a V-Pin Master card, the IRIG-B time can be received through the card. See also V-Pin Fiber
Card with IRIG-B (Type –J).
1PPS
A 1PPS signal can be hard-wired into the Orion DDIO/DCIO module by way of a Phoenix-style
connector (see Figure 5 for location of connector).
DNP3
The time of the DDIO/DCIO module can also be set by way of a DNP3 Master which sends the correct
time. This method provides the least accuracy of all. The typical accuracy is within 100ms of the DNP3
Master’s clock. In Figure 53/Figure 54, the Request Time flag must be checked under either Serial
DNP Settings or DNP TCP Settings (see also Table 27 and Table 28).

XVII. DDIO Output Pulse On/Off Operation
When you use the Pulse On or Pulse Off commands on a built-in OrionLX I/O or a DDIO, the output
will switch to the selected state for the specified time duration before switching back to the opposite state.
The output then remains in the opposite state until the next applicable operation.
For instance, if using a Pulse Off operation and 1000 is issued as the pulse off-time, the output pulses
Off for the specified time of 1000 milliseconds and then switches to the opposite state (On). The output
remains in the On state until the next applicable operation. Alternately, a Pulse On operation pulses the
output On for the specified on-time before switching to the Off state.

Physical Output Point Designation
The Orion DDIO/DCIO module, depending upon the model, may offer a quantity of up to 16 individual
hard contact output control points. Within the browser configuration screen illustrated in Figure 57 which
H
is accessible within the I/O tab, three options are assignable to the discrete physical output contacts.
Table 30 lists the visible selections when the drop down menu is selected via the browser window. These
H
The browser configuration screen also indicates the point number assigned to the memory map illustrated
above for Object 10/12 indices. As illustrated in Figure 57, the Orion DDIO model 100 supplies 16
H
physical output contacts. The mapping of the contacts as Trip/Close (TC) pairs assigns two physical
output contacts per DNP Index. Sending a “Trip” DNP control command to the configured DNP Index will
energize the first point of the two assigned physical output contacts. Sending a “Close” DNP control
command to the configured DNP Index will energize the second point of the two assigned physical output
contacts. If the configuration for the Orion DDIO/DCIO Physical Output Contact is configured for a Pulse
or Latch command, the physical output will exhibit the behavior configured in the Orion DDIO/DCIO.
It is advisable to create a table listing the DNP index assignments for the specific Orion DDIO/DCIO
configuration of the application.

Appendix B – DNP3 Default Variations
A DNP3 RTU can be set up to return analog and counter input points in different formats (variations),
such as analogs being returned to the DNP3 Master as 16 bit values, 32 bit values, or floating point
values, etc. when the master polls the Orion DDIO/DCIO with no specific variation, i.e. a class 0 poll.
The settings in the tables below are the default settings for each point type. Consult the technical
documentation of the DNP3 Master if different settings are needed. For each point type, the DNP3 Master
and the DNP3 RTU must be set up for the same variation.
