Nursing Philosophy
A philosophy of nursing is a statement that declares a nurse’s beliefs, values, and ethics
pertaining to their care and treatment of patients during their nursing profession. As an attendee
of Miami Dade College Nursing school, I have read their philosophy and it focuses on affordable
and quality education as well producing competent nurses. I also read Jackson Memorial
Leininger theory that focuses on transcultural nursing and providing care for diverse patients and
challenging nurses to their full potential. There are four metaparadigms of nursing: Nursing,
For most people when they think about the term nursing, a depiction of scrubs and
stethoscope comes to mind. Nursing to me means nurturing a person with actions, words, and
presence. Actions of nursing means providing care whether its medication administration,
repositioning a patient for comfort, advocating for that patient, and providing those basic needs.
Nursing with words is using therapeutic communication. As nurse communication is a big factor
for effective and accurate care. It is imperative that you know what is going on with your patient
and it is also very important to be able to soothe the patient as well. Presence is simply being
there for your patient for the lowest and highest point of their lives. Also, a lot patients are in
there alone and your presence can make a huge difference in their stay. My goal is to push
flexible that environment can be in a hospital, nursing home, a patient’s home, or even a clinic.
The environment should be safe and convey a feeling of warmth and welcoming. I put myself in

should make that happen to the best of my abilities. The environment should facilitate health and
healing.
Health in my book is your state of well-being and mind set. You are as healthy as feel
and think you are. Although a patient might be admitted into the hospital, they can still be
healthy. Being healthy to me consist of being able to function independently, keeping their
Person is the most important component because it’s the patient. The patient can be any
size, age, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. I will always treat them with the upmost respect
and dignity despite my own personal beliefs. Patients are people too and should be treated as
such. I will respect their privacy and decisions and deliver high quality patient care.
The metaparadigms of nursing consist of nurse, environment, health, and person. Each of
these categories has a different meaning to me and will continue to evolve as I evolve into an
expert nurse. These philosophies define my outlook on nursing and the way I administer care.
