Methods of Test for Rheometer - ODR

1. Scope
This Test Methods Specifies to determine quickly curing and processing characteristics of
vulcanizable rubber compounds by the use of Oscillating Disc Rheometer. The effects of compound
variations on curing characteristics are important in compound development studies or production
control. In compound development, the composition of the ingredients can be varied until the
desired vulcanization characteristics are achieved.

2. Apparatus
To conduct this tests used a Test Bench as per ASTM D 2084/ISO 3417 the curemeter consists of a
Specimen Chamber having biconical disc in a temperature controlled die cavity. The shaft of the
disc is secured in a drive shaft and oscillated through a small rotary amplitude. The torque applied
to the disc represents the resistance of the rubber test piece to deformation and is recorded
autographically to yield a curve of torque versus time. Un-Vulcanize sample 10-15 gm.

3. Definitions
ODR (Oscillating Disc Rheometer/Curemeter): Consisting of a Biconical Disc oscillated within a
temperature controlled die cavity containing the test piece.
Maximum Torque: Measure of stiffness or shear modulus of the fully vulcanized test specimen at
the vulcanization temperature.
Minimum torque: Measure of the stiffness of the un-vulcanized test specimen taken at the lowest
point of the curve.
Time to incipient cure (TS2, scorch time)—measure of the time at which vulcanization begins.
TC90 (90% Cure) —measure of optimum cure based on the time to develop some percentage of
the highest torque or difference in torque from the minimum.

4. Test Process :
Bring the temperature of both dies to the temperature of test with the disk in place and the dies in
the closed position. Give air pressure to machine for applying torque. Open the dies, place the test
specimen on top of the disk and close the dies. This operation must be completed within 20 s. Start
the machine with help of Software installed in Computer, Dies are closed and Disc is oscillating at
zero time and Graph is generating in computer. When the test time complete, final graph curve is
generate with the following Curing parameter value obtained of TS2, TC90, ML, MH & etc. From the
graph and Curing parameters Value evaluating the behavior of Vulcanized Rubber Compound at
the time of Processing of Product.

5. Results
From the above Test process we get the Value of Curing Parameters of Vulcanized Rubber which
ensure the control over the Quality of Rubber compound & Processing Characteristic this results in
Customer Satisfaction.
