Mathematics Grade 7 (2018-19) : Teacher: Mr. Atiq Hussain Mr. Pete Lawton Mr. Tahir Khanzadah
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! You are now enrolled in an exciting and interesting course where you will discover
that mathematics is all around you.
To be successful in your studies, you will need a consistent effort and positive attitude. Participate in class work, work well
with peers, willingness to help others and be helped, ask questions, come for help if needed and be in charge of your own
learning and progress. In order to produce your best work, you need to know what to expect from this class. These
expectations match the ABA Values: Communication, Diversity, Inquiry, Integrity, Knowledge, Open-Mindedness,
Reflection, Thinking, & Willingness to Take Risks.
ManageBac
ManageBac will be the main portal for information including; Scope and Sequence, Unit Planners, Upcoming Cumulative
Tests and Assessments, and records of grades. Information about the units will be edited and updated as we move along
through the year.
Course Topics
This course will cover a variety of topics in mathematics some of which have been covered in Grade 6 to promote
continuity. It is assumed that you would have been practicing and would have mastered most of the skills over the summer
holidays as recommended by your grade 6 mathematics teachers. The topics in Grade 7 are enrichment units as well as
introducing a lot of new skills this year. Following is the list of general topics:
Classroom Materials
You will need to bring the following items to class everyday through the academic year:
✓ Pens, pencils, and eraser ✓ Graph paper
✓ Ruler, Protractor ✓ Your blue copybook
✓ Scientific Calculator ✓ Two-ringed binder and plastic sleeves
Homework
It is impossible to develop an understanding or an appreciation of mathematics without continually working through and
wrestling with problems. Remember, math is not a spectator sport! Therefore, throughout the year you will be given a
variety of assignments to complete. Some will be done during class while others will need to be completed at home.
Parents, we request that you also check ManageBac to monitor your child’s classwork and homework.
Assessments
Assessments will help us assess the student’s ability in various Criterion B, C, & D assignments on the MYP scale
throughout the year.
Class Notes
It is a class requirement that students keep notes in their blue copybooks. In addition to the daily notes, this must contain
practice problems done in class.
Missed Classes
If you are absent from school or miss class for any reason, it is your responsibility to make up the work and complete your
homework. Copy the notes from someone in the class and ask for help if anything is unclear. You may want to check
ManageBac for the work done in class and the homework due.
Grades
The grading system follows the mathematics MYP scale for levels of achievement in each of the four criteria. Each
individual MYP criteria is marked from 0-8. However, the overall semester mark will be determined on a 1-7 scale.
MYP general grade descriptors
Grade Descriptor
1 Produces work of very limited quality. Conveys many significant misunderstandings or lacks
understanding of most concepts and contexts. Very rarely demonstrates critical or creative
thinking. Very inflexible, rarely using knowledge or skills.
2 Produces work of limited quality. Expresses misunderstandings or significant gaps in
understanding for many concepts and contexts. Infrequently demonstrates critical or creative
thinking. Generally inflexible in the use of knowledge and skills, infrequently applying knowledge
and skills.
3 Produces work of an acceptable quality. Communicates basic understanding of many concepts
and contexts, with occasionally significant misunderstandings or gaps. Begins to demonstrate
some basic critical and creative thinking. Is often inflexible in the use of knowledge and skills,
requiring support even in familiar classroom situations.
4 Produces good-quality work. Communicates basic understanding of most concepts and contexts
with few misunderstandings and minor gaps. Often demonstrates basic critical and creative
thinking. Uses knowledge and skills with some flexibility in familiar classroom situations, but
requires support in unfamiliar situations.
5 Produces generally high-quality work. Communicates secure understanding of concepts and
contexts. Demonstrates critical and creative thinking, sometimes with sophistication. Uses
knowledge and skills in familiar classroom and real- world situations and, with support, some
unfamiliar real-world situations.
6 Produces high-quality, occasionally innovative work. Communicates extensive understanding of
concepts and contexts. Demonstrates critical and creative thinking, frequently with sophistication.
Uses knowledge and skills in familiar and unfamiliar classroom and real-world situations, often
with independence.
7 Produces high-quality, frequently innovative work. Communicates comprehensive, nuanced
understanding of concepts and contexts. Consistently demonstrates sophisticated critical and creative
thinking. Frequently transfers knowledge and skills with independence and expertise in a variety of
complex classroom and real-world situations.
