(ii) ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to show my gratitude to TARUC for offering industrial training as one
of the necessary subjects to let us experience current construction industry at the same time
widen our knowledge.

Then, I feel very thankful to my internship supervisor, Mr Chua, who provided me

the opportunity to successfully complete my internship under his company for six months.
He taught me a lot of things about measurement, right my mistakes, and gave me the
chance to visit construction site. Besides, Mr Chua always gave us life advice and guidance
to make sure that we can succeed in the future. I have no hesitation to say that, without his
constant support and valuable advice from time-to-time, I would probably fail to complete
the work in an appropriate manner.

My special gratitude goes to Mr. Roger Phang, my senior as well as a permanent

staff in CE Alliance Sdn Bhd. Mr Roger guides me on measurement a lot to make sure I
execute my works perfectly to minimise loss. Furthermore, Mr Roger’s kindness and
friendliness allow me to work and communicate with ease in the company.

Moreover, I am grateful especially to Datin Sr Norhaizan Yusoff for pass her

knowledge on construction industry before the internship start. She had conducted many
classes and lecture to make sure our internship runs smoothly. At last, I would like to thank
all office staffs of TARUC Kuala Lumpur Branch for their sincere co-operation and
support for giving me the opportunity and always help and support me for making a
standard report.

f. Training department

12
Training constitutes a basic concept in human resource development. It is
concerned with developing a particular skill to a desired standard by instruction and
practice. Training is also the act of increasing the knowledge and skill of an employee for
doing a particular job.

The training department where I placed in was the lowest level in the company. In
this department, my job is to measure and taking off structural and architectural buildings
elements. Trainee transfers the figures which we measured on drawing or PDF file to an
Excel file which follows the format of the company (refer to diagram 2 &3). Sometimes,
trainees also carry out inking of Bill of Quantities for tender preparation. Moreover, site
visit is necessary when there are discrepancies between drawings and work done on site.

g. Training personnel

Besides trainee, there are seven trainees, two permanent staffs and head of the
company, which is my internship supervisor. For six months, these two permanent staffs,
which are also my senior had taught me a lot knowledge such as measurements, claims,
delays in construction, pricing and many more. They are very friendly and easy to
communicate, allowing me to blend into the workplace comfortably. Furthermore, they are
willing to assist me whenever I faced challenges and I felt very grateful to them.

Furthermore, my colleagues help me to understand the importance of teamwork.

Whenever Mr. Chua assigned us some task, we distributed equally among each other and
help each other when we face difficulties. Having colleagues in the workplace allow me to
complete my task before deadline.

My internship supervisor, Mr. Chua also assists me in many ways. For example, he
gave me advice on measurement so that I can measure accurately. Then, he always asks us
to stay positive at all time to make sure I can be a proactive and successful person in the
future.

KHUSUS

The scope of works is Internal and External brick wall, doors and windows within
this project. This project is expected to complete within eighteen (18) months from the date
of possession. Location of the project is 30762 (Hsd 205137), Fasa NU3A3, Mukim
Bandar Nilai Utama, Daerah Sembilan, Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus. This project
consists of 132 units of 2 stories terrace house, 1 unit of electric substation and I unit of
guard house. In this project, I was assigned to take over cover corner units only, so that
quantity might differ from intermediate units and end units.

Parties involved in the project include Employer, Architect, Civil and structural
engineer, Mechanical and electrical engineer, Quantity Surveyor and Interior designer.
Employer of the project is Genos Developemnt Sdn Bhd, Architect is Sakura Architect,
Civil and structural engineer is Lollicon Sdn Bhd, Mechanical and electrical engineer is
Brolly Sdn Bhd, Quantity Surveyor is UCH Builders Sdn Bhd and Interior Designer is
Dballz Sdn Bhd.

For corner unit, this project consists of 21 external brick walls, which 9 brick walls
on the ground floor and 12 brick walls on the first floor, 13 internal brick walls which is 5
brick walls on the ground floor and 8 brick walls on the first floor. On the other side, there
area 5 box up walls, 1 external and 4 internal. This projects also consists of 4 types of flush
door with galvanized single rebated door frame and 3 types of sliding doors with aluminum
frame. All doors are finished with painting. The corner unit of the project also consists of
10 types of windows.

b. Job responsibilities and details of work undertaken

14
My job responsibilities here include measurement of structural and architectural
work. For example, concrete work such as beam, slab, column, staircase, reinforced
concrete roof, brick wall, floor finishes, wall finishes, waterproofing. During my first
month of internship, I measure brick wall for the project “NOVO AMPANG” and I realise
that brick wall is complicated than what I was expected. After that, my seniors and I went
to “NOVO AMPANG” for a site visit because there was some argument and amendment
on the brick wall, so we demand confirmation from the site office there.

After some time, my senior taught me how to calculate claims. It is very important
to take extra care while calculating claims because once the claims is calculated wrongly, it
would be a big loss to the company, and it can lead to bankruptcy of a company. Besides
that, my responsibilities include carry out inking for tender documents. I have learnt that
the inking of a Bill of Quantities must be in the form of handwriting, and no mistakes are
allowed when inking.

Moreover, I need to check drawings to make sure there are no discrepancies

between old drawings and new issued drawings. If there are discrepancies, I need to send a
query list and outstanding list to my senior. In addition, one of my responsibilities in the
company housekeeping. I make sure my workplace stays clean and neat always by tidy up
drawings, vacuum the floor and wipe the tables. At the same time, I avoid having snacks or
meal on the table so that the construction drawings are clean and comfortable to measure.

c. Challenges of work undertaken and solutions

15
During the six months internship, I faced a lot of challenges regarding
measurement. There are many elements I haven’t seen or learn from lecture notes. For
example, a hexagon shape pile cap or different shapes of structural steel. I am not familiar
with these elements, because unique elements shape, so it definitely slows down my work.
But fortunately, my seniors are glad to guide me on measurement of these elements
patiently, those guidance are useful and stay fresh in my mind.

After that, next challenges I face is time management. I spend most of my time on
work and hanging out with friends at night, I realise that I never really had time for
assignment. However, my colleague and senior ask me to organize my time neatly. A
balance between work, academics, and personal life seems to be a challenge, but I am able
to achieve it through habit forming and by adopting a more organized life.

Inside an organisation, communication is vital and often is the key lead to success.
During my early stage of internship, I find that I am having difficulty to ask questions for
the fear of being judged. I realise that I am hesitant to ask my colleagues or seniors
whenever I face problems on my job. But luckily, my seniors are very initiative and willing
to help me to solve my problems. After that, I am not afraid to ask them questions because
they are willing to lend a helping hand and they will not judge me for my ignorance.

Lastly, one of the challenges I face during my internship is adopting a new lifestyle.
Unlike university life, which is only a few classes in a day. Compare to university life, I
have to work from 8.30 am until 6 pm every weekday for six months. The hours and the
new living situation clearly make socializing more difficult than before. The internship life
is quite tiring but it is surely an unforgettable experience from me.

d. Application of knowledge

16
A quantity surveyor is a person who calculates the amount of materials needed for
building work, and how much they will cost. Quantity surveying might seem like a pretty
simple job, but it requires a lot of knowledge and skills to execute the job.

First, taking off is the principle of all measurements, which is length times width
times height. Most of the elements in building including structural and architectural were
took off based on that principle depending on the unit. As far as I can tell, what I learn in
TARUC and what I apply during my internship is also the same, except the fact that I take
off elements in the form of paper in TARUC while I take off elements in the form of
computer in my works. In short, mastering measurement is very important before
commencing the industrial training.

Next, basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel are
necessary skills to learn as a quantity surveyor. In the company, I use Microsoft Excel to
carry out our daily tasks, so it is vital to master and remember the command and shortcut
keys in order to speed up the working process.

Moreover, basic AutoCAD skills is one of the necessary skills to learn as a quantity
surveying. With the skills I learn from TARUC during my diploma, I am able to apply it
during my internship. For example, I know how to separate layers in AutoCAD to identify
location of each elements. In addition, AutoCAD skills allow me to understand the
drawing well and thus I can minimize my mistakes.

17
Format of taking off and measurement:

Diagram 2: Formula of taking off doors.

Diagram 3: Formula of taking off external wall.

18
CHAPTER 3: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion
In conclusion, I had been exposed to a quantity surveyor and meaningful working
life. Throughout my internship, I could understand more about the definition of a quantity
surveyor and prepare myself to become a responsible and innovative quantity surveyor in
future. I realise the actual working environment is different from what I learnt from the
lecture notes. During this period, I had gained a lot of knowledge and experience regarding
quantity surveying, all thanks to my internship supervisor, colleagues and seniors. Starting
from this day, all these knowledges and experiences are my useful tools in the future.
Besides, my computer skill had also improved along my internship. For instance, I had
improved my Microsoft Excel skills through familiarize shortcuts key to execute command
and thus I can complete tasks faster.

In addition, my communication skills had strengthened as well during this period, I

am not afraid to ask questions and communicate with strangers too. Moreover, the
assignments issued my TARUC had help me to learn independently, manage my time well
and learn to be patient. Finally, I would like to once again appreciate everyone who has
made my industrial training a superb experience.

Recommendation
My recommendation for this industrial training is shorten the internship period
from 6 months to 3 months. In my view, 3 months is an appropriate period to learn what’s
necessary in the company. Furthermore, shorten the internship period also allow students
to graduate faster. Except from that, I suggest that most of the quantity surveying firm
should adopt quantity surveying software to shorten the measuring and calculating time so
that trainees or staff can finish task in time.
