Section 1.2– All questions require you to refer to Figure 1.3. The figure can be found below.

1.2. 1 – Divergent boundary

1.2. 1a - diverging
1.2. 1b – mid-ocean ridges
1.2. 1c –construction of lithosphere

1.2. 2 – Transform boundary

1.2. 2a remaining unchanged
1.2. 2b mountain belt

1.2. 3 convergent boundary

1.2. 3a moving together
1.2. 3b a. ocean-continent convergence
b. ocean-ocean convergences
c. continent-continent convergence
1.2. 3c- labeled with shapes

Labels for Figure 1.4

A – Digergent
B – Transform
C – Convergent

Section 1.3– All questions require you to refer to Figure 1.5.

1.3 1 – The East coast of South America matches up with the West side of the Atlantic Mid Ocean Ridge.
1.3 2 – The West coast of Africa matches to the shape of the East side of the Atlantic Mid-Ocean Ridge.

1.3 3 – I think they are not an exact fit but have similar overall shapes, to prove this a map or exact image of each
could be cut out and lined/matched up to see how close they match.

Section 1.4– All questions require you to refer to Figure 1.6

1.4 1 – At 350 to 600 km deep is where the deepest earthquakes occur.

1.4 2 – Earthquakes along a linear zone.

1.4 3 – 0-100 km Shallow earthquakes

100-350 km Intermediate earthquakes
350-600 km Deep earthquakes

1.4 4 –

1.4 5 – The occurrence of earthquakes in the asthenosphere is explained by the fault lines are being subducted
from the lithosphere into the level below it and then causes the earthquake to happen.

Section 1.5– All questions require you to refer to Figure 1.7

1.5 1 – 5 intervals of reverse polarity have occurred.

1.5 2 – About 800,000 years ago the normal polarity began again.

1.5 3 – Earth experienced reverse polarity 1.5 mya.

1.5 4 – Normal polarity C began 2 mya.

1.5 5 – Intervals of revere polarity have lasted less than 1 million years.

1.5 6 – Based on the Figure another polarity reversal should occur in the near future.

Section 1.6– All questions require you to refer to Figure 1.7 and 1.8.

1.6 4 – A 28km, B 37 km, C 87 km

North Atlantic – rate of seafloor spreading – 1.4 cm/yr.

Pacific – rate of seafloor spreading – 4.35 cm/yr

Section 1.7: Hot Spots and Plate Velocities: - refer to Figure 1.9:

1.7 1 – min and max age for Kauai is 3.8-5.6 million years

1.7 2 – 47,000,000 cm

1.7 3 – 12.4 max and 8.4 min

Section 1.8: Synthesis Questions:

1.8 1 – The boundaries of major plates.
1.8 2 – Deep Ocean trenches Subduction
1.8 3 – Mid Ocean ridges

1.8 4 – Earth Scientists think that the lithosphere is descending into the mantle near Tonga islands because the
earthquakes occurring there are deeper than in other areas.

1.8 5 – Certain minerals record the direction and intensity of the magnetic field from when they were formed. This
provides a history of past magnetic fields and tectonic plates.
