Dear Parents and Guardians,

My name is Abbey Cook and I am an early-childhood education major at Georgia College. I

am currently serving in your student’s classroom as a student teacher. For one of my courses, I have

the opportunity to create a Family Literacy Engagement Project for my students. This project will

provide an interactive experience for children and their families, as it includes a literacy activity. A

few weeks ago we discussed the structural elements of poetry during our poetry unit, such as: verse,

rhythm, meter, stanza, line, rhyme scheme and repetition. We also learned about different types of

poems, such as haikus and cinquains and even wrote our own cinquain poems. For this activity, your

child will have the chance to write their own poem. They can refer to the resources provided

regarding the elements of poetry and different types of poems, as they construct their individual

poems. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with this activity! I am excited to read

your child’s creative poem!

Sincerely,

Abbey Cook
Family Literacy Engagement Activity Instructions:

This Literacy Activity builds on your child’s prior understanding of poetry and asks that he or

she write an individual poem, using the resources provided. I have provided several handouts

pertaining to the different poetry elements. I have also provided worksheets to practice identifying

these different elements. In addition, there are several handouts explaining the different types of

poems, such as: couplet, cinquain, limerick, acrostic, haiku, concrete, and quatrain. Using these

resources to assist you, please work with your child to construct your own unique poem, using any of

the poem types listed above. Please follow the criteria for the poem type you select and have fun

writing your creative poem!
