Miss Coffey believes that assessments should show what students know without tricking them. Both formal and informal assessments are important. She wants students to reflect on their own work, get feedback to improve, and set goals to help with self-assessment. In her classroom, Miss Coffey aims to make assessment motivating by rewarding achievement and allowing students to see their growth toward goals.

Assessments give students the opportunity to demonstrate their
knowledge, they should not be designed to trick them. With that being said, Assessments should also not always be in the form of a test. Different learners mean different ways to show what one knows. In my classroom, I believe that formal and informal assessments both hold a high level of importance. I believe that student work will not be perfect but a work in progress. A teacher should give students the opportunity to look back at their assignments, projects, and assessments. They should be given feedback, so they know how to improve. In my classroom, I want to stress to students the importance of reflecting on your own work and self-assessment. Encouraging students to set goals for themselves helps them with their own self-assessment. In my classroom I don’t want students to feel as though assessment is a bad thing or scary. Giving students something to work toward or rewarding achievement can be motivating. Students love to be able to move their icon to the next level or change to the next color and visibly see their growth. As I mentioned above, when students have set academic or personal goals for themselves, it is important that they are constantly reminded of these goals visually or verbally. This will help them achieve the goal and lead them toward success.
