Standard One : Key Competency 1B
The competency that I decided to choose is listed under
standard one, 1B. “Understand and value each child as an
individual with unique developmental variations, experiences,
strengths, interests, abilities, challenges, approaches to learning
and the capacity to make choices”.
Throughout my experience as a student
teacher, I believe that I always valued this
competency. This is a photo of me and
one of my students, his name is Luke.
When I had my first encounter with Luke, I
noticed that he really enjoyed being read
to. Before nap time, I would always read
to him, he enjoyed that. I valued his
interests, while also valuing his decisions.
In this image, I’m implementing a
lesson with my students. Before
implementing. I thought about my
students abilities, interests. Overall, all of
my students shared interests. But they
all didn’t have the same abilities. Jackson
(red shirt), usually had a really short
attention span, Luke (blue shirt) and Kurt
(green shirt) usually stay focused when I
was implementing. I created a lesson plan
that could balance between this. I
decided to use a sensory box for my
lesson plan. My students are 12 months
old, I kept in mind that they only have a
certain amount of abilities, such as
reaching, grabbing, throwing. A sensory bin
was perfect.
More Details
Overall I believe that throughout my experience as a student teacher, I always kept my
students best interest in mind. I was knowledgeable of their abilities and overall
developmental strengths. This showed throughout the lesson plans that I implemented.
Within those lessons, the activities that I had were mostly sensory. My students were
interested in discovering, and any sensory activity was perfect to fulfill this interest.
