INTRODUCTION
Pumps in the chemical industry are very crucial to supply energy for transporting or compressing
fluids. Working on the basic principle of conservation of energy, pumps serve in a wide range of
applications such as aeration, in the car industry for water-cooling and fuel injection, in the energy
industry for pumping oil or natural gas or for operating cooling towers. Pumps are also used in the
medical industry in artificial replacement of body parts such as artificial heart and penile prosthesis.
Centrifugal pumps are the most widely used and hence play an important role in industrial operations.
Along with pumps, components like valves help us to control the process variable of flow rate. With
the growing demands for digitalisation and advanced process control, the automated detection of
flow parameters is yet another milestone to be achieved across all industries.
Pump-It is an amalgamation of these, trying to accomplish the same by providing you a challenging
model making competition wherein you get to drive the fluid. Come up with an innovative idea to
design a flow regulation mechanism by means of which we can get the desired flow rate and can
estimate the feed parameters of the entering stream in a vessel using sensors.
AIM
You have to come up with an electrically powered model of a centrifugal pump designed to transport
the fluid (water) through a given hydraulic network and manipulate the flow parameters. You will then
be required to collect the water in a container which would have another stream (water) entering the
same container with a constant unknown flow rate. You will have to come up with a model to
estimate the unknown flow rate using a sensor attached to a second container (situated below it)
which directly collects water from the first container. The objective of this competition is to give
students a better understanding of the working of a centrifugal pump, flow regulation and prediction
of feed parameters using sensors.
The model should also pump the fluid to the desired height into a container. The outlet of the
container 1 should be positioned so that water from the container 1 must fall directly into container 2,
which would have a height sensor attached to it.
MODEL
Components:
• The impeller diameter of the centrifugal pump (has to be built from scratch) must be less than
12 cm.
• A section incorporating a motor, a battery (V volts) and a switch to operate the battery.
Note: No electric supply will be provided.
• Valves or any mechanical (non-electronic) pressure drop mechanism by which flow rate can
be regulated (valves must be designed and manufactured on your own).(Compulsory: The
reasoning of mathematical values like the angle at which the valve is positioned and other
parameters need to be stated on the day of competition as well as in the abstract with proper
measurements or experimental data)
• A container (1) (transparent) with an outlet positioned at a particular height in it (to be
decided by the participants). This should have an outlet (orifice) with a particular diameter (to
be decided by the participants but less than or equal to one-fourth of the diameter of this
container)
• Another transparent container (2) used to collect water from container 1. Container 2 would
have a sensor to measure the parameters of the water flowing into it and will be located
directly below the first container
FLOW DIAGRAM
The container 1 has an inlet feed of water with a constant flow rate (unknown) and the feed from the
pump (already known to the participants). The pump can be designed such that the flow rate of water
from the pump can be assumed constant and known. Your aim is to use the sensor attached to
container 2 to estimate the parameters of the container 2 such as rate of change of height or
volumetric flow rates at different instants of time and estimate the unknown flow rate from it.
Pipe clips must be used to connect pipes. All pipe clips shown in the diagram must be detachable on
the event day. Only the water-filled inlet tank, and unknown constant water feed and stands for
keeping the two containers will be provided during the actual competition.
JUDGING CRITERIA
A) Abstract Screening [10%]
Based on the abstracts submitted as mentioned in the abstract screening section below and adhering
to it.
SPECIFICATIONS
1. The outlet diameter of the pipe after the flow regulator must be of 1/2 inch.
2. The inlet pipe must fit into all pipe clips of 1/2 inch.
3. The outlet diameter of the pipe from the container needs to be decided by the participants and
should be less than or equal to one-fourth of the diameter of container 1.
All the above specifications must be met and will be validated on the event day. Hence, participants
are advised to perform experiments on the above mentioned specifications before the event day.
TEAM SPECIFICATIONS
1. Each team may consist of a maximum of 4 participants.
2. Students of different institutions can also form a team.
3. Participants can be from different departments of which at least one member should be majoring in
Chemical Engineering.
4. Teams should first register for Pump-It and get a unique Team ID exclusive for Pump-It competition.
5. No participant can register for more than one team. In this instance, both the teams will be subject
to disqualification.
CERTIFICATE POLICY
1. Top 3 teams will be awarded Certificates and Cash Prizes.
2. Certificates and Cash prizes will also be awarded to a team with ‘Best Innovative Model’ (apart
from top 3 teams).
3. Certificate of Participation will be given to all qualified teams performing on the event day.
