Introduction

The earliest public transport was water

transport. Public transport is also
known as public transit , mass transit .
It is a shared passengers transport
service which are available for use by
the general public ,as distinct from
mode such as taxi cab , hired bus , and
transportation network companies ,
which are not shared by general public
without private arrangement .Urban
public transit differs distinctly among
Asia , North America , and Europe.
Objectives

 To know the problems faced by

passengers in public vehicles.
 To know the actual number of public
vehicles functioning in Kathmandu.
 To know about the various transport
companies throughout the Kathmandu.
 To know about the facilities provided by
various transport company.
 To analyze the reason behind the
overload in buses and other transport.
 To know about the various problems
faced by transport companies.
Significant

There are several studies conducted on CONDITION OF PUBLIC

VEHICLES . But there are few studies on condition of public

vehicles in Kathmandu valley with the help of reliable

information. So this study will be significant in different ways to

identify the problems faced by the passengers as well as the

transport companies in Kathmandu valley in recent time and to

give the accurate condition of our transportation facilities. This is

expected to provide accurate information on condition of public

transport which may be helpful for those who are interested in this

field.
DRAWBACKS /LIMITATIONS

 We didn’t have enough time to collect

primary data.

 Some people ignored us and hesitated to fill

up the questionnaire.

 Since the staff of Transport Company were

busy doing their work we didn’t get much time
to interact with them.

 Some people were not filling the

questionnaire because of the English language.
Review of Literature

Review of literature gives a clear as what is relevant for the

researcher in order to get real findings and so it is necessary

to review all the things for this research work. This report

presents about review on conditions of public in Kathmandu .

According to this study, the condition of

public transport in Kathmandu is not very good . According to this

study, passengers have to face a great deal of difficulties which are

as follows: busy roads , unmanaged buses , over crowd in public

transport etc. The study recommends that the problem of

passengers and transport company could be reduced. The studies

are not found to clarify actual conditions of public transport . This

research focused on fact of limited area that highlights different

parts of public transport specially their economic status and

fulfilled the objectives of study.

Research Methodology
This study has been conducted in Kathmandu valley. It has

adopted descriptive as well as exploratory design.

Selection of Area

This study is on “CONDITION OF PUBLIC VEHICLES IN

KATHMANDU” . For our research we have visited three places for

collection of data. The name of places are:Ratnapark,

Bhaktapurand Lalitpur. Because in those places, there are

transport companies and bus stations. Therefore those site has been

chosen as study area. This study has concentrated to the public

transports and passengers.

Sources of Data

Data is the major source of statistical investigation and the subject statistics cannot be imagined without data. Thus,

data collection is the first and essential step in statistical investigation. Statistical enquiries can be collected from

various sources. However, there are two basic sources of data collection;

Primary data:Data that are collected by an agent or investigator originally from its basic source for the

first time for any statistical enquiry is known as primary data. These are also often called first-hand data

because such data are used for the first time by the investigator. For example, Central Bureau of Statistics

(CBS) of Nepal collects data in various fields. Such data are primary in nature. It fulfils all the requirement

of the investigator because they are collected as per the requirement of the investigator. Primary data are like

raw materials and they have to be processed after collection. Collection of primary data takes a large amount

of money, time, and efforts.

Secondary data:Data which were already collected and used by someone else but are also useful for other

investigator is called secondary data. These types of data are not original for the user. These are also often

called second-hand data. The data collected by CBS can be used by others. So such data become secondary

data for other users and primary for the CBS itself. The same set of data may be secondary for someone, but

primary to its collector. Sometimes secondary data may not accurately coincide as per the objective and they

may mislead the results. These data are used from the existing sources. It saves money, time, and efforts.

Secondary data should be carefully and critically examined before they are used.

Thus, among the above two type of data collection, we have used both of them. We have used primary source in

some data collection where as in some we have prefer to use secondary data collection instead of primary source

to gather much more information regarding the research.

Population and Sample

Population:

The term ‘population’ means the people living in a specified geographical area, be it a village, ilaka,

district, country or the world as a whole. Population is defined as a group of individuals of the same

species living within a particular area at a particular time. People live in a particular area, example

village, town, city or country. The human population of a village indicates the total number of people

living in that village. Thus, population of a country means the sum of all people, infants, children, boys

and girls, adult men or women living within the boundaries of the country in a given year. The

population of a country may change from time to time. A population is a group of interacting individuals,

usually of the same species, from similar cultural group and society of different age, sex, occupation,

religion and language. (Population education book class 11Dr R.K.Shah)

Sample:

If examining only a part of the whole is used to collect the information, then it is known as sampling.

When some of the elements are selected with the intention of finding out information about the

population from which they are taken, that group of elements is referred to as a sample and the process

of taking a sample is called sampling. Simply speaking, the method of selecting a portion of the universe

with a view to draw conclusions about the universe under study is known as sampling. For example, if we

have to test the defectiveness of light bulbs manufactured by a factory then we can take any certain

number of such bulbs, say 100 pieces and test them. These 100 pieces of bulbs make a sample and the

process of selecting these bulbs out of all bulbs (population of light bulbs) is called sampling. (12

Data Collection Technique or Method

There is various type of data collection technique and they are listed below;

Direct Personal interview: In direct personal interview method of data collection, the investigator himself

collects data through personal contact. If the researcher wants to research about anything, then the
researcher would go and make direct queries to the concerned people. This type of interview is known as the

method of direct personal interview.

Indirect Oral Interview: The method of indirect oral interview is suitable when the information collection is

not possible by direct interview of the informants. This situation can occur in case of sensitive questions such

as wealth accumulation, prostitution, illegal activities, etc. In such cases, a mediator who is in touch with

investigator and the informant collects the data directly or indirectly through oral interview.

Information through local correspondents : In this method, local correspondents are appointed to various

parts and areas. They are instructed to collect and send information to the investigator or to the concerned

office where the information are further processed. Government offices and other authorities such as Nepal

Rastra Bank adopt this method. This method may take longer time than in case of direct personal interview

method.

Mailed Questionnaire Method: If a questionnaire is prepared to collect necessary information and it is sent

to the concerned people in various parts through mail so that the respondents would reply the questions, then

this method of data collection is known as mailed questionnaire method. The respondents are requested to

answer all the questions and return the questionnaires by post within a certain time.

Schedules Sent through Enumerator: It is also a questionnaire method of data collection, but it is different

from the mailed questionnaire method because in this method enumerators fill in the questionnaires

according to the responses of the respondents. Enumerators go informants, contract them personally, and fill

up the questionnaires. Population censuses Nepal areconducted by this method. Thus, from the above listed points

of data collection techniques we’ve used the direct personal interview and questionnaire method for the research.

CONCLUSION

From this research we have concluded that the

condition of public vehicles are not good . The
service they provide are not enough to meet
the needs of passengers . The main problems
of public vehicles are uneducated drivers and
conductors , over load in office time , old and
damaged seats , low number of vehicles etc.
Some transport company are trying to bring
new facilities but because of government
policy and over population they are unable to
implement it .
RECOMMENDATION

We would like to recommend that first the

government should bring efficient policies for
betterment of public transports. The transport
companies should implement new facilities for
the comfort of passengers. Even the transports
should limit the number of passengers in order
to avoid accidents.
