Data is the major source of statistical investigation and the subject statistics cannot be imagined without data. Thus,
data collection is the first and essential step in statistical investigation. Statistical enquiries can be collected from
various sources. However, there are two basic sources of data collection;
Primary data:Data that are collected by an agent or investigator originally from its basic source for the
•
first time for any statistical enquiry is known as primary data. These are also often called first-hand data
because such data are used for the first time by the investigator. For example, Central Bureau of Statistics
(CBS) of Nepal collects data in various fields. Such data are primary in nature. It fulfils all the requirement
of the investigator because they are collected as per the requirement of the investigator. Primary data are like
raw materials and they have to be processed after collection. Collection of primary data takes a large amount
Secondary data:Data which were already collected and used by someone else but are also useful for other
•
investigator is called secondary data. These types of data are not original for the user. These are also often
called second-hand data. The data collected by CBS can be used by others. So such data become secondary
data for other users and primary for the CBS itself. The same set of data may be secondary for someone, but
primary to its collector. Sometimes secondary data may not accurately coincide as per the objective and they
may mislead the results. These data are used from the existing sources. It saves money, time, and efforts.
Secondary data should be carefully and critically examined before they are used.
Thus, among the above two type of data collection, we have used both of them. We have used primary source in
some data collection where as in some we have prefer to use secondary data collection instead of primary source
The term ‘population’ means the people living in a specified geographical area, be it a village, ilaka,
district, country or the world as a whole. Population is defined as a group of individuals of the same
species living within a particular area at a particular time. People live in a particular area, example
village, town, city or country. The human population of a village indicates the total number of people
living in that village. Thus, population of a country means the sum of all people, infants, children, boys
and girls, adult men or women living within the boundaries of the country in a given year. The
population of a country may change from time to time. A population is a group of interacting individuals,
usually of the same species, from similar cultural group and society of different age, sex, occupation,
Sample:
If examining only a part of the whole is used to collect the information, then it is known as sampling.
When some of the elements are selected with the intention of finding out information about the
population from which they are taken, that group of elements is referred to as a sample and the process
of taking a sample is called sampling. Simply speaking, the method of selecting a portion of the universe
with a view to draw conclusions about the universe under study is known as sampling. For example, if we
have to test the defectiveness of light bulbs manufactured by a factory then we can take any certain
number of such bulbs, say 100 pieces and test them. These 100 pieces of bulbs make a sample and the
process of selecting these bulbs out of all bulbs (population of light bulbs) is called sampling. (12
There is various type of data collection technique and they are listed below;
Direct Personal interview: In direct personal interview method of data collection, the investigator himself
•
collects data through personal contact. If the researcher wants to research about anything, then the
researcher would go and make direct queries to the concerned people. This type of interview is known as the
Indirect Oral Interview: The method of indirect oral interview is suitable when the information collection is
•
not possible by direct interview of the informants. This situation can occur in case of sensitive questions such
as wealth accumulation, prostitution, illegal activities, etc. In such cases, a mediator who is in touch with
investigator and the informant collects the data directly or indirectly through oral interview.
Information through local correspondents : In this method, local correspondents are appointed to various
•
parts and areas. They are instructed to collect and send information to the investigator or to the concerned
office where the information are further processed. Government offices and other authorities such as Nepal
Rastra Bank adopt this method. This method may take longer time than in case of direct personal interview
method.
Mailed Questionnaire Method: If a questionnaire is prepared to collect necessary information and it is sent
•
to the concerned people in various parts through mail so that the respondents would reply the questions, then
this method of data collection is known as mailed questionnaire method. The respondents are requested to
answer all the questions and return the questionnaires by post within a certain time.
Schedules Sent through Enumerator: It is also a questionnaire method of data collection, but it is different
•
from the mailed questionnaire method because in this method enumerators fill in the questionnaires
according to the responses of the respondents. Enumerators go informants, contract them personally, and fill
up the questionnaires. Population censuses Nepal areconducted by this method. Thus, from the above listed points
of data collection techniques we’ve used the direct personal interview and questionnaire method for the research.
