DEPARTMENT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Fifty or more years ago, good parents were those who provided for their children
and taught them to be mannerly, respectful and responsible. Parents worked to
protect their children from the danger of the world and worried about the basics
such as food and shelter whether their children dressed appropriately? Did they
sit up straight? Did they get enough to eat and proper medical care?
Successful parents produced children whose outward behavior was the yard stick
against which the job the parents were doing was measured. Little was known
about the inner emotional world of children and how it developed.
Finding enough time in the day and balancing motherhood and career.
Effectively disciplining children
Allowing children to develop independence in a dangerous world
Being a single parent and /or having enough help and support
Dealing with bed time hassles
Having unreasonable expectation of children
Ensuring children receive a quality education
Avoiding consumerism in today’s consumer-centric society
Marriage expectation among our childless couples are major challenges
was adjusting to new roles within the marriages, however this issue also
impacted at least one of the households with children
Maturation – several parents indicated that one of their major challenges
would be dealing with their children growing up. This was most often
discussed in the context of older children (14+), and included ideas like
drinking, dating, entering a new school, less parental oversight and so on.
Co-parenting. The primary challenge of our single mums with joint custody
was how to overcome their ex-husbands negative influence on their
children. In both cases they felt like their priorities were not shared, and
being undermined by the laissez faire style of the other parents.
Planning for the future. This challenge also seemed to come often with
childless couples, who keenly felt that their decisions in the next year or
two would have long term impact on their lives.
Time. As with the everyday challenges, having a hectic schedule was also
discussed as a major challenge for some families. Also related to time was
the issue of the parents not having enough time to themselves either
because of their children or work schedules?
Health. Most of the households did not see health and wellness as a major
challenge however; one of the children in our study had an incurable
disease that reduced her life expectancy to 35. This was a major challenge
to her parents, obviously and one they saw only increasing as their
daughter grew into womanhood
