Fun Facts- The three colours of Mexico’s flag hold deep significance for
the country and its citizens: green represents hope and victory, white
stands for the purity of Mexican ideals and red brings to mind the blood
shed by the nation’s heroes.

Location
Mexico is bordered by the United States to
the north and Belize and Guatemala to the
southeast. Mexico is about one-fifth the

the west is an 800-mile (1,287-km) peninsula that forms the Gulf of

California. In the east are the Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Campeche,
which is formed by Mexico's other peninsula, the Yucatán. The center of
Mexico is a great, high plateau, open to the north, with mountain chains on
the east and west and with ocean-front lowlands beyond.

Mexican History
At least three great civilizations—the Mayas, the Olmecs, and the Toltecs
—preceded the wealthy Aztec empire, conquered in 1519–1521 by the
Spanish under Hernando Cortés. Spain ruled Mexico as part of the
viceroyalty of New Spain for the next 300 years until Sept. 16, 1810, when
the Mexicans first revolted. They won independence in 1821.

From 1821 to 1877, there were two emperors, several dictators, and enough
presidents and provisional executives to make a new government on the
average of every nine months. Mexico lost Texas (1836), and after defeat
in the war with the U.S. (1846–1848), it lost the area that is now California,
Nevada, and Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico, and parts of Wyoming
and Colorado under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1855, the Indian
patriot Benito Juárez began a series of reforms, including the
disestablishment of the Catholic Church, which owned vast property. The
subsequent civil war was interrupted by the French invasion of Mexico
(1861) and the crowning of Maximilian of Austria as emperor (1864). He was
overthrown and executed by forces under Juárez, who again became
president in 1867.

Mexican Food

Mexican Food originated from the combination of the foods of indigenous

Mexican people with Spanish foods. Chiles and tortillas are important to
Mexican food. Chiles are used for seasoning and numerous varieties exist.

Chiles come in a variety of forms: red, black, green and yellow, and fresh,
dried or tinned. Tortillas are made from corn or wheat and are often used
as eating utensils. Food is scooped onto the tortillas and then eaten. Most
of the dishes that people think of as Mexican are antojitos. Antojitos
include enchiladas, tacos, tamales, quesadillas, chalupas, and tostadas that
evolved directly from the original Indian cooking.

Mexican Drinks, Liqueurs and Cocktails

Damiana Liqueur - A small shrub with smooth, pale green, oval leaves and
aromatic yellow flowers. Damiana (turner diffuse) is found in hot, humid
climates such as Mexico and South America as well as Texas and
California. The Damiana Margarita is a very popular drink in the Los

Margaritas - Probably the most popular Mexican drink with the basic
ingredients of tequila and fresh lime juice. There are many varieties of
Margaqritas to enjoy.

Tequila - The National Drink and Essence of Mexico - Tequila, the first
distilled spirit on the North American continent, is known to most
Norte Americans as a fiery beverage to be dutifully downed during
adolescent rites of passage. Today, tequila and its rustic cousin, mezcal,
are fast becoming the newest discovery by sophisticates of the
international dining and drinking scene. Not a newcomer, Tequila has
existed south of the border since the early 1700's, often fuelling the
fires of revolutions when victories and food were scarce.

Fun Facts-Tequila, liquor for which Mexico is famous, is made from the
native blue agave plant. Named after the city where it originated, Tequila is
primarily manufactured near Jalisco, which is 65 kilometres (40 miles)
northwest of Guadalajara.

Mexican Religions

Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion in Mexico. After the conquest

by the Spanish, Mexico's indigenous peoples readily accepted Catholic
beliefs and practices, but they did so on the basis of their pre-Hispanic
religious beliefs. The Virgin of Guadalupe, for example, was associated with

the pagan goddess Tonantzin. As a result, Mexican folk Catholicism is

frequently described as syncretic. Catholic beliefs pervade the life of
ordinary Mexicans. Because the Catholic Church has been a very powerful
institution in Mexican history, its relationship with the state has at times
been tense and sometimes openly hostile. In recent decades, Protestant
missionaries have been particularly active in southern Mexico and among
the urban poor.

Fun Facts-Mexico has the world’s second-highest number of Catholics

after Brazil.

Mexican Sports

Soccer is the favourite sport of the vast majority of the population. Unlike
other Mexican sports, soccer can emotionally divide the country, especially

when Mexican rivals meet each other. People from all over the country
attend matches, which are usually held on Sundays. Winning the coveted
Copa Liberators’, the Latin American equivalent of the European Cup, is an
honour that motivates both players and fans alike in 1970; Mexico’s Azteca
Stadium was host to the FIFA World Cup finals. This event was one of the
most memorable in sports history as Pele and his Brazilian team won for the
third time, making them the first country ever to win the tournament more
than twice. Mexico hosted the event again in 1986.

Fun Facts-Mexico hosted the Summer Olympics in 1968 and the FIFA
World Cup soccer championship in 1970 and 1986.

Mexican Music, Dance and Cinema

Mexico's musical tradition shows strong folk as well as modern influences.

However, the various music traditions have managed to unite Mexican
society into one popular musical culture and following. Modern Mexico's
music lovers are equally swayed by the tunes and rhythm of traditional

music like mariachi and ranchero songs as well as by the Latino beats of
hip-hop and salsa. Mexico also has a flourishing film industry and has
produced a number of internationally acclaimed film directors. However,
Mexico's most famous contribution to popular cinema is perhaps the
beautiful Mexican actress Salma Hayek who has endeared herself to
thousands of fans across the world.

Mexico beaches are, quite simply, some of the finest beaches in the world. In a
country steeped in history, culture and architecture, the famous beaches of
Mexico are what draw millions of tourists to this beautiful country each year. The
best Mexico beaches can be found both along both coasts, and every beach has its

In my opinion Mexico is an amazing country, rich in physical beauty,

traditions, food, and wonderful people. If I ever have the chance to visit
Mexico, and not just for Cancún’s Spring Break, take advantage of it. There
are so many things offered. The social, political, economic, and cultural
value offered by the people and land are opportunities that should not be
passed. I hope that one day everyone can comprehend the beauty of
Mexico, and not only comprehend it but appreciate it for what it truly is: a
gift. Mexico is a large and beautiful country.
