VIRTUE OF FASTING

Hazrat Sahl ibn Sa’ad reports that the Holy Prophet

said, “There is a door in Holy Paradise (Jannat) which is
called ‘Raiy’yaan’. On the day of Qiyaamat, only those
who kept fast will enter (Jannat) through this door. With
the exception of them, none other will be permitted to
enter through this door. It will be announced, ‘Where are
those who kept fast?’ Then they will stand up. With the
exception of them, none other will be able to enter
through this door of Jannat. When all those who kept
fast pass through this door, it shall be closed and none
will enter through it again.” (Bukhari Shareef)

About The Narrator

Hazrat Sahl ibn Sa’ad is a beloved companion of the Holy

Prophet . His title was Abul A’as and his name was
actually Haznun.

The Prophet changed his name and kept is Sahl. Haznun

refers to a hard piece of land and Sahl refers to a soft and
good piece of land. He was the last Sahaba of the Prophet
from Madina to pass away in Madina. He passed away at
the age of one hundred.

Our Imam Azam Abu Hanifa also made Ziyaarat of him.

Brief Explanation of the Hadith

This Hadith of Rasoolullah is in Bukhari Shareef and is

very self explanatory. It shows us how blessed we are
when we keep fast, that Almighty Allah has set aside a
special door in Jannat ul Firdaus, through which only those
who keep fast shall enter.

This Hadith also shows the excellence of fasting as an

Ibaadat. We should thus strive so that we too will be
permitted to enter through the door of Raiyaan. This
Hadith also explains that although others will enter to
other doors, those who kept fast in Ramadaan will be the
only ones allowed to enter through the Door of Raiyaan.
