FIGURE Q1 shows a longitudinal spanning monolithic staircase with two flights.
Calculate and sketch the actions acting on the staircase (Flight 1 and Flight 2).

Given the following data:


Going =275 mm
Riser =175 mm
Waist =200 mm
Finishes =1.2 kN/m2
Variable action =4.0 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete, fck =30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel, fyk =500 N/mm2
Nominal concrete cover =30 mm
Assume bar diameter =12 mm

a) State the value of the actions.

b) Determine and sketch the maximum moment


and shear force for the staircase (both flights).

c) Design the staircases including both flights.

d) Provide detailing.

FIGURE Q2 shows the plan layout of staircases (sections STR1 and STR2) at the first floor level of a hall. After the
first flight of the staircase (STR1), it breaks into two staircases (STR2) spanning on the right and left angle. The
staircases are supported by beams while a landing is shared at the intermediate stage a longitudinal spanning
monolithic staircase with two flights. The overall depth of landing and waist of the flight is 150 mm. Given the
following data:

Riser = 175 mm
Going = 250 mm
Finishes = 1.0 kN/m2
Variable action = 4.0 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete, fck = 30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel reinforcement, fyk = 500 N/mm2
Nominal concrete cover = 30 mm
Assume bar diameter = 12 mm

a) By applying the beam size of 200x200 mm at


both ends, sketch the cross section X-X of
staircase STR1 including the effective span of the system.

b) Calculate the design action and bending moment


of staircase STR1 and draw the actions and the
maximum bending moment. State the important values.

c) Design all reinforcements for staircase STR1. Provide


detailing.

FIGURE Q3 shows a detail and design of staircase for the
double story art gallery. The parallel flights are
supported by landings spanning perpendicular to the
flights. The flights of upward and downward directions
are separated by a void with width of 250 mm. The
staircase consists of 10 steps with overall depth of
landing and waist is 150 mm while the height of riser is
150 mm. Given the following data:
Characteristic of variable action = 4.0 kN/m2
Finishes and handrails = 1.2 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete = 25 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel = 500 N/mm2
Concrete cover to reinforcement = 25 mm
Diameter reinforcement = 12 mm

(a) Determine the design actions of the staircase.

(b) Design the main and secondary reinforcements of


the staircase.

(c) Check the shear resistance and deflection.

(d) Verify the cracking requirement for the both


reinforcements of staircase.

(e) Provide detailing.

A longitudinal straight reinforced concrete staircase supported by reinforced concrete beam at both ends is shown
in FIGURE Q4. The staircase is purposely to be designed for a private building. The flight of staircase consists of 12
steps with permanent and variable actions are 1.6kN/m2 and 3.5kN/m2 respectively. Given the following data:

Characteristic strength of concrete = 25 N/mm2


Characteristic strength of steel = 500 N/mm2
Unit weight of concrete = 25 kN/mm3
Nominal concrete cover = 25 mm
Beam size = 200 mm x 450 mm
Thickness of slab = 180 mm
Bar size = 10 mm

a) Describe the dimension specifications of riser and going for this type of staircase.

(b) If minimum dimension of going is required for this


staircase, determine the size of riser and going.

(c) Design the main and secondary reinforcements for


the staircase.

(d) Check the shear resistance and deflection.

(e) Check the cracking requirement for the both


reinforcements of staircase.

(f) Provide detailing.

Q5: Final exam Sem2 2013/2014
A straight longitudinal reinforced concrete stairs supported by reinforced concrete beams at both ends is shown in
FIGURE Q5. The staircase is specifically for the public building. Landing slabs at both ends of the stairs are
monolithically connected to the stairs. The flight of staircase consists of 10 steps. The average thicknesses of
staircase are 279 mm and 189 mm. Given the following data:

Permanent action = 1.2 kN/m2


Variable action = 4.0 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete = 25 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel = 500 N/mm2
Unit weight of reinforced concrete = 25 kN/mm3
Nominal concrete cover = 25 mm
Beam size = 220 mm x 400 mm
Upper Landing area = 1200 mm x 1000 mm
Lower Landing area = 1500 mm x 1000 mm
Reinforcement = 12 mm

a) Determine the suitable size of riser, going and waist.

FIGURE Q6 shows a staircase for a building. Landing slab A is supported on beams along AB and FE, while the
waist-slab and landing slab B are supported longitudinally along CD, as shown in the figure. The finish loads
and live loads are 1 kN/m2and 5 kN/m2 respectively. Use riser R = 160 mm, trade T = 270 mm, waist = 200 mm,
concrete grade = 25 N/mm2 and steel grade = 500 N/mm2, fctm = 2.6 N/mm2, unit weight of concrete = 25
kN/m3, cover 25 mm, Øbar = 12 mm.

(a) Calculate the bending moment of the staircase.

(b) Design the main and secondary reinforcement of the staircase.

(c) Design the main reinforcement of the landing slab A and sketch the reinforcement detailing.

(d) Check shear resistance, deflection and cracking.

FIGURE Q8 shows plan view and longitudinal section of two flights of a reinforced concrete staircase that
connected ground floor to the first floor of a building. Flight 1 comprises of 6 steps while Flight 2 comprises of
10 steps. The overall depth of landing and waist is 150mm while the width of going and the height of riser are
260 mm and 160 mm respectively. Given:

Variable action = 5.0 kN/m2
