In Callie Kimbal, ‘Take Me Out’, Billy is the main protagonists in the poem. The plot

revolves around him throughout in the poem. He recently had a conflict with her wife who has

been having an admitted affair with his best friend, Cosmos. He is probably naïve and fails to

understand the needs of his wife, Deb. Her wife, subtly confesses having cheated on him. The

Callie portrayal of Billy is that, he is self-centered, controlling and narcissistic husband who fails

to undertake the traditional works of husband. It encourages the readers of the poem to speculate

on his changing behavior and objectives in the poem. He was literally whining to her wife, Deb

since she was having a relationship with her best friend, cosmos. A conflict arises between the

two couples caused by the cheating Deb.

Billy stays at home throughout the day. Billy fails to understand the needs of Deb. In the

play, ‘Take Me Out’ By Callie Kimbal, what is more evident is the stereotypical roles being

played out by both Billy and Deb. Gender stereotypes has been portrayed in the play for example

the act of Billy staying at home while Deb was working. It would have been expected that should

be out working while Deb was to be a housewife staying at home. Billy was lied several times

for example Deb admitting that he cheated on Billy with Cosmos and promises to never do it

again. The play is spoken from a unique point of view describing various gender stereotypes that

exist and its evolution.

Billy has insecurity problems. He fears that her wife, who goes to work will continue

cheating on him thus he naively request that they have a baby to keep him busy at home. The

fragmented nature of the poem is certainly a tool of characterization. Rather than Billy appearing

powerless, the emotions inspire and fuel his being into venturing and filling the void by whining

and requesting for a baby at home. It’s quite sad, melancholy and the poet further describes him

as lonely, struggling and unhappy. He is generally dissatisfied with her wife and the life in

general. He

Billy is a husband to Deb. He is a handsome young man who is in his20s. It is however

evident that inability of Billy to understand the needs of Deb caused her to cheat on him with his

best friend. Billy has further asked the unexpected from Deb. He was requesting that they have a

child together so that he may have something to do in the course of the day. Such questions

could only have been expected to be asked by wife or housewives for that matter. These

represents changes in gender stereotypes in the modern days and the changing roles that is being

embraced by all parties. Traditionally, it was women who could have asked for children whom

they can take care of. Deb further goes to work leaving Billy behind.

Billy is clearly wrestling with the larger issues in life that have complex social impact

like gender stereotypes. Since he is the main character, his actions are considered very important.

He tries to save his marriage by confronting his cheating wife and further requests for a child that

could keep him busy in the course of the day. He goes against all the traditional gender

stereotypes and that makes him a very complex being than Deb.
