Monday 27th April Year 3 EAL Tiers 2 and 3

WALT: practise past tense positive and negative forms and write a recount of
the last paragraph

1. Look at the last paragraph of ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ below. It is

written in the present tense. Underline the verbs and circle the
negative form

Suddenly, the man wakes up! In front of him stands the rainforest child and all
the creatures of the great Kapok tree. The man sees strange and beautiful
plants, and he smells their fragrant flowers, but he doesn’t touch them. He
feels the steam rising from the forest floor, but he doesn’t hear a sound,
because the creatures are strangely silent. The man picks up his axe. He is
about to hit the tree. Suddenly, he stops. He turns and looks at the animals and
the child. Then, he drops the axe and walks out of the rainforest. He doesn’t
come back.

Irregular past tense verbs have a special form:

eat – ate; write – wrote; go – went

For the negative, don’t change the main verb. Use ‘didn’t’ instead
play – didn’t play; eat – didn’t eat

2. Read the last paragraph again and put the verbs in the past simple
tense (positive and negative). Some are regular and some are
irregular verbs.

Suddenly, the man [a]___________(wake up)! In front of him [b]__________

(stand) the rainforest child and all the creatures of the great Kapok tree. The

man [c]__________(see) strange and beautiful plants, and he

[d]___________________(smell) their fragrant flowers, but he

[e]_____________________(not touch) them. He [f]__________(feel) the

steam rising from the forest floor, but he [g]__________________(not hear)

a sound, because the creatures [h]__________(be) strangely silent. The man

[i]__________(pick up) his axe. He [j]__________(be) about to hit the tree.

Suddenly, he [k]_____________(stop). He turned and [l]__________(look) at

the animals and the child. Then, he [m]________________(drop) the axe and

[n]_____________________(walk) out of the rainforest. He

[o]_________________________(not come) back.

3. Imagine you are the man. Write a recount of when you woke up, using

your senses to describe the setting. Before you start, make notes in

the table.

I could smell I saw I heard I felt

Suddenly, I woke up on the forest floor, at the foot of the great Kapok tree.
