CREATIVE BRIEF

2016 XPRIZE PRIZE BOOK

BACKGROUND

Founded in 1995, XPRIZE, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is the leading organization


solving the world’s Grand Challenges by creating and managing large-scale,
high-profile, incentivized prize competitions that stimulate investment in
research and development worth far more than the prize itself.  The
organization motivates and inspires brilliant innovators from all disciplines to
leverage their intellectual and financial capital for the benefit of humanity. 
XPRIZE conducts competitions in five Prize Groups: Learning; Exploration;
Energy & Environment; Global Development; and Life Sciences.  Prizes won
include the $10 million Ansari XPRIZE for private, suborbital space flight; the
$10 million Progressive Insurance Automotive XPRIZE for creating safe,
affordable, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 MPGe (energy
equivalent); the $2 million Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander XCHALLENGE for
advanced rocket development; the $1.4 million Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup
XCHALLENGE for highly effective, ocean surface oil spill cleanup methods;
the $2.25 million Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE for advancing sensor and
sensing technologies; and the $2 million Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health
XPRIZE for creating affordable and accurate ocean sensors.  Active prizes
include the $30 million Google Lunar XPRIZE, the $20 million NRG COSIA
Carbon XPRIZE; the $15 million Global Learning XPRIZE, the $10 million
Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, and the $7 million Barbara Bush Foundation

The XPRIZE Prize Book is an annual publication that provides an overview of


the non-profit organization and its competitions (awarded, current) and
future concepts.

ASSIGNMENT

Create a design for the 2016 XPRIZE Prize Book cover (front and back).

AUDIENCE
Thought leaders, technologists, futurists, engineers, programmers,
designers, scientists, physicians, ecologists, global developers, activists,
volunteers, geeks, nerds and people aged 18-44 who are interested in
changing the world.
CREATIVE DIRECTION
The Prize Book cover should reflect the multitude of ideas showcased within
the book itself. Rather than showcasing one overarching concept, it would
be ideal if the final solution could give the reader a glimpse into what they
will encounter when they open the book and read what is inside.

LOOK & FEEL


Since XPRIZE is an “innovation engine,” we would like to see concepts that
reflect forward-thinking design concepts. The Prize Book cover should refrain
from design elements that can be classified as “vintage” or “retrospective,”
and instead contain a sense of contemporary futurism.

TONE
The XPRIZE brand is best understood in the following five words: “Disruptive.
Relevant. Inclusive. Visionary. Empowering.” Please consider these as you
design your cover solution.

MANDATORY ITEMS
XPRIZE logo. Title of the book.
The cover must wrap from front to back.

TIMING
The first round for review on Thursday, December 17th. Feedback given on
Monday, December 21. Final designs are due Friday, January 8.

SPECIFICS
11” x 17” (this includes the spine).
We can build a bleed out too if necessary.
